Rocky Mountain ATV has an even cheaper option. Been working great for me, actually that's the only filter I've ever used on my Tenere. I'm always ordering tires, parts and supplies for my bikes. Oil filters are a good filler item to get order total to $99 for free shipping.

May just do that I have to buy another tire anyway and I have been dealing with these guys for a few years.

You can only purchase three filters per order plus $7 shipping makes them $6.83 per filter. Purchasing ten filters from Rock Auto is $5.75 each.

After weighing the alternatives (my town doesn't have a motorcycle parts and accessories shop, only OEM dealerships) which amount to purchasing another oil filter and wondering if its canister was too long (as was the Bosch DP3300), I decided to bow down and purchase the OEM Yamaha filter. After reading of people paying $15-up for one filter, I was surprised that my dealer had them for $9.95, which was $2 less than what I paid at Wally for the Bosch. Tomorrow I'll install it, top up the small amount of spillage I'm anticipating from the project, and call it a lesson learned.

SuperTech 6607 - no go

So I happily discovered that Wally World had SuperTech filters back on the shelves, so I bought a couple. I ended up not using them because when you spin them on, they bottom out in an odd way. You know how when you tighten a filter, the gasket touches, then as you continue (even by hand tightening) you sort of squish the gasket and get maybe 3/4 - 1 turn more out? Well this one wasn't like that. As soon as the gasket touched, it was done turning, as if the gasket was too hard, or something internally was stopping it. It was very weird, so I returned them and went back to Purolator.

Just found my Bosch leaking after about 3000 miles. Luckily I only bought 2, so I'm not out much. Time to find OEM

I had posted this as a separate thread, and it got merged. So, now I know that this isn't a unique phenomenon. Time to order up some Mahle filters for sure.

Before you install a non OEM filter insure that the bottom is not a recently redesigned filter with a convex area around the threads. I think that it is bottoming out against the engine case and not allowing the gasket to seal.

I hope you don't mind...I stole your pic for an informational Facebook post for my riding friends.

The Mahle OC-575 is the best bang for quality and price, when you get one in your hand you will know what I am talking about.
And Rock Auto is the best price as far as I can find.

No problem dietDrThunder. I don't use non OEM filters because I'm too lazy to research which ones work. This information hit the FJR Forum before the Tenere Forum, so as a public service, I stole the picture and information to inform the Tenere owners what was causing their leaky oil filters.

I had been using Bosch filters for the past 25k miles with no problems, until last month. I caught one leaking. The mount appears concave, as it should be, but still leaked. I was out of town when I noticed the leak. Searching WalMart, my only option where I was on a Friday evening, resulted in finding out even more brands went to the convex design. I bought two more Bosch and one did seal, but I'm afraid my only option left will be OEM.

I have been avoiding OEM because 1. The filters are actually pretty poor quality; 2. I live rural and would like to be able to buy filters locally without having to mail order them; 3. I travel a lot and do endurance rallies, so I would like an easy to find option in case I have problems on the road and need a replacement, especially at odd hours.

If I recall someone was machining mounting bolts to work with the convex filters. This may be a good solution.

You live rural and want to NOT buy online? Give up on that and either order Mahl OC-575 or OEM in a case quantity and carry at least one with you, if not two. I took two filters with me when I rode to the start of the IBR in '13. One for a pre-rally oil change in PA, the other for a post rally oil change, that ended up being in Canada on the round-a-bout way home after the rally. They don't take up much room. ;)

If you really want to, you can probably have a machine shop modify the stock stub, or create a remote filter system that allows you to use an auto filter. Miatae use the same thread diameter, fwiw, 20mm x 1.5 pitch, if memory serves. It's not a bad idea, I just don't think too many have done it so far and it hasn't been well documented on the forum yet. So, if you go down that road, take pictures of before and after and post what you did and how it worked to the forum so others can decide if it's something they might want to do.

bump for another thing i learned today while at wally world trying to get a filter. mobil was at least nice enough to add an "A" to the model number and cause me pause to look. this makes the sticky list in oil forum not usable.

EDIT- had k+n filter for free pick up but i saw many very recent oil nut leak posts from seemingly reliable sources. ordered MAHLE OC-575 from amazon 8 bucks here friday

Yeah i saw that today at a O'reily. The new unti is a 108a. It is convex. It is the one they carry at wally world. O'reilly had wix filters as well for 7.50, that are still concave.
