I think I still have the Napa 1358 I cut open around here, if I find it, I can upload some pics. I am remembering the pleats were about the same size and roughly the same number as the OEM, just that it was very short, less than half the height of the stock one.

Leaving that issue aside for a minute, consider this; the Mahle OC575 comes out to less than $5 each on rock auto with the code. The Napa gold 1358 is $13.49 at my local Napa. Even if it was on sale, half off; that puts it well over $6 a filter.

For me, I would only bother with the Napa 1358 if I needed a filter available locally, in a hurry. Like I was doing an emergency oil change away from home on a road trip or something. Otherwise, under normal circumstances, I can't see why anyone would bother with that filter; especially if it wasn't majorly discounted.

Would this work on the Super Tenere also?
You can buy unions w/o the hex as well. I have considered trying that swap, but haven't gotten around to it. Oil changes haven't been coming as frequently as they used to. 13/16" is close enough to 20mm to interchange. I've done this before making remote adapters.

Purolator and Napa filter design change

Happy New Year.

I purchased a new Purolator L14610 to change my oil. Have used them for years and the same filter works on my cars too The new ones are red, but more importantly they are no longer concave inside. I installed the filter, and the filter stops before the gasket is tight enough to work reliably(IMHO). I then went to NAPA to get a 1356. Same change on the inside, no longer concave. I checked this against the current filters I have in the garage. They are different. I did not want to take the chance that they would leak so I purchased the NAPA specific filter for the Tenere. Sure enough, still concave and works perfectly

Just wanted to share me experience with the new filters. They may work, but I was not comfortable with the less than tight contact of the gasket.

I use the 1358, not the 1356, in a WIX box. Same filter I've used for 180,000 miles on two Yamahas. ::26::

I know some people act like your bike will explode if anything orange touches it, but Fram filters still work fine as of a month ago. I have used the Fram PH6607, the DG6607 and the XG6607 as well as their motorcycle specific filter PH6017A recently. I'm not afraid.

I also run Rotella oil, so I'm sure the bike isn't long for this world.........

Confessions time.......

I worked for a major manufacturer of air and fluid filters. ALL of the filter manufacturers buy filters from each other. All of the manufacturers kill themselves to save pennies when they make low value filters (eg, car and M/C filters). Making filters is a complex process so small runs of low value filters do not make sense for them. Whether they are Fram, Baldwin, Purolator et al they will buy the small run filters for less than it would cost to tool up and make them. I purchased a case of filters at work for my Strom and they came from Baldwin with my employers logo on it.

Most Motorcycle filters are small run

Long and short? Consumer Oil filters are fairly generic.

If you ever get the chance, walk the production line of a filter plant, do it....very cool to see

I've put hundreds of thousands of miles on Fram filters in various vehicles and never had a problem. I keep all of my vehicles, including motorcycles, well beyond 100,000 miles and one Toyota truck that went 285,000 miles+ and was still running well when sold. The only problem I ever had with any oil filter was a Purolator motorcycle specific one that had incorrectly machined threads, that caused it to feel like it had tightened down when in fact there was barely any contact between the seal and the engine block. I immediately had 4 quarts of expensive Mobil 1 4T flooding my garage floor upon startup!

In my job, I once started a hydraulic machine, after a filter change, without the plug in the button of the filter housing...:mad:, thankfully there is a level sensor in the oiltank, and tank was a bit low in the ammount of oil..
But on the other hand, you are VERY quickly, VERY sure that something is wrong;), and not when you are in the middle of nowhere:eek:

Just replaced my Bosch premium 3300 that I just put on the bike because it was seeping. Picked up the purolator one 14612? that was recommended. Upon visual inspection, you wouldn't be able to convince me that the two aren't made on the same production line. But it does seem like I was able to snug the purolator just slightly tighter and at the moment it's not seeping

Bosch filters are made by Purolator.
