BLUF: The oil didn’t fully drain when I was doing an oil change.

I have a 2015 ST with ~12k miles on it. The oil seemed to drain fine when I removed the drain plug. I changed the filter and replaced the drain plug. When refilling, she started to overflow after 3L with a mix of new and old oil spilling out. I removed the drain plug again to lower the level and it dribbled a little but wouldn’t drain. I didn’t see any metal shavings in the oil or on the drain plug.

Do y’all think I might have a blockage in the oil pan? Is there a more non-intrusive way of inspecting it without disassembling the bottom end?

The Super Tenere has a dry sump oiling system. There are TWO drain plugs. One for the crankcase and one for the oil sump.

Are you aware that there are two drain plugs?

Well... aren’t I the dumbass... I got in a hurry today and forgot to pull the second one. My brain immediately went “doom and gloom”...
Welcome to the society of idiots. You do something enough times, you're going to do something stupid. It's the beginner that has never made any mistakes.

How happy/relieved are you?

Now, try and make sure that you're not "doing the same thing, and expecting different results". Because, I've never done that before. . . .

That matches up with what I put in. The recommended amount didn't satisfy the oil light; wouldn't go off until I added some.

Bloody hell! That’s worrying! And yet others have stated that the oil glass is not accurate and the only way to do it accurately is by measurement! I think I’ll stick to the oil glass...

I drain on side stand and fill on center stand. Also I measure and have always been right in the middle of the sight glass. Luck I guess.

To the original poster, are you going to change the oil again since your new is mixed with old oil from the sump? If you do I assume you will keep the new filter. You won’t need as much oil to refill without swapping the filter.

If he never ran the bike, because it was overflowing when filling up, isn't the filter still 'dry'? If so, it will need the whole amount :)

Don't worry too much. The oil light is oil level, not oil pressure.

And it's a dry sump design. A little more or less makes no change to how much oil is being pumped thru the engine at any given time. The sump level being 'low' just means you're circulating the oil you have slightly more often than with a touch more oil. Or put another way, the volume of the entire system is slightly less, but the engine's needs are always fulfilled.

The trick to the sight glass is using the method specified in the owner's manual. Most people just do it like a wet sump and get varied results.
