When the pressure increases, the o-ring will deform with the cap being broken. Probably a very small leak/spray, but it doesn't take much with oil.

Looks like a straight crack, maybe a rock or temp differential
Me thinks something was nibbling on that cap.
Kind of resembles on a smaller scale the result when raccoons & squirrels munch on my garbage can lids.
Perhaps the oil cap is made out of a soy-based polymer plastic which is yummy to little rodents.

I could go with the rodent munching, except that it appears to be the inside edge. The picture with the oil all over the place doesn't show the cap damage. He would have seen that. Damage must be on the inside edge. Not that a rodent couldn't chew on the inside edge, but the outside edge would be much easier.

So oddly enough, the cap wasn't the issue. Upon further investigation it seems to be coming from these areas but it's hard to tell. Anybody know what part that silver piece is? Is this a project I should tackle myself or let the dealer handle it? Getting it fixed quickly is more important than a few hundred dollars.

Shiny part is the cam chain tensioner. Do not take it off. The top rubber piece fills in where they bored the head for the cam. I would clean it up real good, throw on some baby powder, start it up and see where the leak is. The baby powder will let you see the leak real quick.

I refer you to post #2, I'm just too polite to say I told you so. <grin>
The valve cover has never been off, I bought this bike new and never had it Mx'd at a shop besides the cruise control recall. Just a freak failure apparently. It also could be the silicone half moons too, I didn't get all the details, they might just be doing everything as a good measure.
