thanks for all your comments. recently watched Youtube video, who use Honda filter as substitution. following i check after market filters, most of them fit different brand bike or engine under the same serial part number. I suppose as long as filter itself can do its job properly and fitting interface is correct, I don't mind use Honda's one as well.
maybe there is day I use Yamaha oil filter in Africa twin.

Heres my solution on both my Tenere & my Strom.
The Moose skid I bought for the Ten was already cut out around the filter by prev ownr. All we did was fab a steel plate with screw holes....drill n tap the skid plate & boom....there ya go. I painted it with bedliner so easy touch up if needed.

The Strom has a Touratech skid which attaches like the Altrider....buncha nuts on brkts behind plate....PITA. The solution is easily obtained..... U Nuts. I ordered a bag of 20-25 Dorman brand at OReillys for well under $10. (There are small assortment packs in the help section...but much more $$ cuz ya need several packs)

I remove mine for every oil change. The nuts are captured in the plate so it's easy. This way I can inspect in between pan and sump for leaks and bang out the dents made while riding.

Same here. It's just 4 bolts and removing it makes it easier and not spill on the plate. This also gives me a chance to remove some rocks that may have been stuck there. I remove both oil drain plugs.

You guys must have a different style Altrider skid plate. To get mine off, there are 4 bolts/nuts at the back end, 2 small ones on the rh front and the 1 thru bolt on the lh front. I too, take it completely off for an oil change to check for leaks. The dynamat looks like a good idea.

I think they are referring to the picture. . . . which is not an Altrider plate. I have the Altrider, and I remove it every time also. Now that I have a nice surface to work on, it's not a big deal.

Same here. I have tried several different oil filters and not had enough room to replace it without pulling the skid plate.

Hi Tenman,
I found your post about oil filters that don't require bash plate removal, but given the fact that several different bash plates seemed to be discussed at times, I'm not sure if your plate may be something different than altrider. Please share what lower profile oil filters you have used--I have an upcoming oil change & I grit my teeth at the thought of taking that plate off each time...

Also, I see that you "recontoured" your filter with channel locks--I have inadvertently done the same removing one when I didn't have my filter wrench available, and I was thinking about how that could impede normal oil flow, which could possibly cause some catastrophic engine problems, but I am no mechanic and will leave that possibility to the many other forum members far more skilled than I--I would love to hear more.

First post
Thanks in advance
