Oil chart in the manual is pretty clear, 15w40 works from freezing to 40C (110F). Pretty good range.

Nothing lighter than 10 weight recommended in any conditions.

Kinda the same, but different. . . . my kids's 2.4L Dodge Dart takes 0w-20. . . . my Jeep takes 5w-20. I've always felt that's too thin for our heat. But, both vehicles run fine, so what do I know?
Those low weights are specified mostly for EPA fuel economy ratings. My Mustang recommends 5w-20 unless you are going to do a track session in which case it recommends 5w-50. Seems like an open admission that the lighter weight oil will not protect adequately under extreme conditions.

Oil demands become much greater when a car is 'pushed'. Track days require different treatment, so I don't find that surprising. I have a 1.8T VW engine that's supposed to run 5W40, but most people are fine (and used oil analysis shows it to be fine) with running 5w30 which is more readily available. Reason: the "w40" part is really required when pushing the car, i.e. driving at over 170 km/h for greater than 15 minutes (that's 105 mph for some of you). The strains & stresses of track use are a different beast :)

If you buy the Rotella and expect the rebate offered, they try their best to not pay the rebate for any reason. Not just Shell, it happens with any oil. For example they are offering about $7.00 rebate on the T6 bringing it down to $14.99 or whatever. That is for sure a good buy if that is your choice in oil, but they usually have limitations, like good for only one rebate per household. This is OK, buy one gallon. The trouble and ripoff I've seem many times is they say for example "maximum 5 gallons, 5 rebates per household". So you think this is a great deal and buy 5 gallons expecting 5 rebates and only get one. You need a separate receipt for each rebate, so go in the store, buy one gallon, load it up, go back in, buy one gallon ect, get 5 receipts. You may get paid then, but even then about 50/50 chance. Buy 5 gallons, one receipt, you just paid full price for 4 gallons because they will deny every time any purchase over one gallon per receipt.
I gave up on rebates. Too many times got ripped off.

I agree on the rebate runaround. If they make it really hard-the average guy won’t go through the hassle.

This particular store loves the rebate game. On a previous purchase I remember getting a rebate and it was for “in store credit only”. By the time you get the rebate you wonder “what the hell is this”?

After reading this thread I was curious about Walmart on line prices, on line Valvoline full synthetic was over $8 a quart but at my local Walmart today it was $7.37 . My Walmart does not have any Mobile One filters. They also did t have any Supertech motorcycle oil.

What shop was this? Only Yamaha store I know out that way was Oakville, but they closed.

Personally, I use Rotella T6 which runs about $50CAD plus tax for 5L. Yes, Americans, it's twice/three times the price here than down south. I have been using it in all of my bikes since pretty much day one with zero issues, will continue to use it.

I use OEM filters from Snow City, cost me about $20/filter.

Apex Cycle in Cambridge next to the Harley dealer. I had to pay by phone then go to the dealer and phone the parts desk from the parking lot. A fellow came out and put my stuff on a fold-up table then darted back inside.

Be careful comparing the price of T6 in Canada and the USA. For some reason the containers are different sizes. Rotella in the US comes in 1US gallon jugs - that's 3.78 litres. In Canada it comes in 5 litre jugs which is almost 1/3 larger than the 'merican ones. In my VStrom I run T6 which I usually pick up on sale at Canadian Tire for $43CAD ($8.60CAD/litre). In the USA I bought T6 at Walmart for $24USD ($6.35USD/litre) - at today's conversion rate of 1:1.41 that is $8.95CAD per litre, so the geographic price difference is pretty much a wash. - YMMV

From now on I'm going to stick with using T6 in this machine and use the Mahle filters that were recommended earlier in the thread. They seem well made. The Yamaha ones, despite being Denso, look cheaply made... maybe better than a Frantz filter.
