Here’s my oil analysis from my 2014 S10 with 25k miles on it. The oil (Valvoline 10W/40 Synthetic from Walmart) had 4,269 miles on it and they suggest going to 5-6k intervals.

Boron and sodium were higher than average, I wonder if that's a Valvoline thing. That's who I've been using for a while now.

The low metal counts looks great.

The boron and sodium are in both grease and coolant. As this is the first oil change since breaking I wouldn't worry at all, but it will be interesting to see what they are next time.
I'd suggest planning to change next at 10,000 miles for several reasons:
Easy to remember on the 5,000 marks.
The sample rate will be nearly the same.
Slightly less than the called for number of miles, but not wastefully less.

Take a second look, he has over 25,000 miles on the bike.

Good catch Phil. It helps explain why the metals were so low.

Still not something I'd worry about. I hope the OP doesn't mind but I looked through his posts and he just had the valves checked early. I know mechanics who will use a touch of grease on their feelers or on the tops of new shims as pre-lube, so am wondering if that could be it? Maybe from a new CCT?

@Chainwrecks - When the oil was sent in I hadn't had the valves checked or any other work done to my bike. The oil was from the 6th oil change. Here's my maintenance spreadsheet. Anyone else keep records like this? Any suggestions?

The spreadsheet looks great. I have something similar with all the vehicles, which I can sort to any one of them.

The following is from the forum Bobistheoilguy.com and could answer where the boron came from. Again, everything else looks great so I'd just see what the next results are.

Here's a VOA provided by CTC Analytical Services of Phoenix, AZ and reported in a recent issue of Full Throttle magazine:

Silicon: M1 15W-50: 9ppm
Boron: M1 15W-50: 228ppm

Sodium: M1 15W-50: 13ppm
Magnesium: M1 15W-50: 43ppm
Calcium: M1 15W-50: 2464ppm
Phosphorus: M1 15W-50: 1193ppm
Zinc: M1 15W-50: 1315ppm
Molybdenum: M1 15W-50: 90ppm

Exxon recommends silver cap 15W-50 for the engine, but not for wet clutches due to the molybdenum.

If it comes out looking like oil I am a happy man, if it is frothy, filthy, smelly or full of metal bits then I may get a little concerned.

@LJM – I was curious in what the results would say and if I could go longer that 4k miles between oil changes as the U.S. owner’s manual recommends. Strangely, the euro owner’s manual recommends every 6k miles. I’ll be doing 6k intervals now and do another oil analysis when my bike hits 50k miles.

U.S. manual on left, euro on right.

That makes sense. I wonder if manufactures use the oil change intervals based on info. they get from from oil makers who want to sell oil, using data from testing, or just some new guy writing copy for owners manuals that thinks 3k sounds good ?

TenereStreets,

I was wondering if you change your oil filter with each oil change. Yamaha recommends every other and I will, sometimes, abide just out of convenience. It could possibly effect the data returned from Blackstone. Definitely considering extending my services to 5000mi and worrying less. Thanks.

I replace the oil filter when changing the oil. I use the OEM oil and air filters.
Thanks, that's what I thought if you're going to the trouble of analyzing old oil.

Just did another oil analysis from Blackstone Labs as my 2014 S10 hit 55k miles. The results look mostly better than when I sent a sample at 25k miles. They’re suggesting I try 7k between changes.
