OEM Pannier Install Issue

Installed the OEM panniers today and when setting the right side case in the rack, there is about half an inch of play between the bottom of the case and the rubber cap attached to the foot rest. The bottom of the case moves freely around the rubber cap. Left side fits like a glove.

I double checked the upper side case stays are on the correct side.

Other than trying to shim the gap, anyone have this issue before or seen a solution?

Can you loosen that lower bracket and adjust it upward to fit?

That first picture shows the top mount still on the floor. Are you just setting the boxes on the bottom mounts?

I meant to add a disclaimer to the first post. The forum user I bought the set from didn't include the supports that go under the heat shield on the left and under the passenger foot peg mount on the right.

I ended up getting a new rack and those are extras on the floor that I used to compare for any size differences.

PS: if anyone is interested in 80% of a rack, let me know.

There are quite a few bolts and other hardware involved with those brackets I suspect something is put together wrong somewhere. Both sides of mine seem to fit together very well.
Another possible is those red latch things at the top, mine don’t work very well and it becomes quite a hassle getting them on and off properly sometimes, could you post a picture showing how the top fits on the bracket ?

Vgazer did you ever figure out why it wasn’t fitting properly ?
Never did. I took everything off and reinstalled it but the right side never came together as it should. Ended up using an extra piece of rubber to shim it.

Hmmm, I’ve only ever seen that when I didn’t have the case properly seated on the top rail. In that case however, you can’t lock it in place with the red levers.

Just read this. I believe but may be wrong that that on the ES one rear footpeg sticks out further than the other is it anything ti do with that.

For my 2015 model, there was no difference in the kit for the ES or standard model. Not 100% sure, but I don’t believe Yamaha has changed anything in that regard since then.

I have a 2015 ES. My right side box fits like yours....It has been like that for 5 years now. I don't think I have an issue.

You know, this prompted me to look closer at mine. I also have a gap there on the right one, but only about 1/4” in that case. Been riding it for 5+ years and never noticed before.

Well crap!! Now I have to go look at mine. Have y'all came up with the real purpose of that triangle piece on the left mount yet?

That bit of wire? I’ve always wondered what that was for.

Using same OEM Yamaha bags from my previous 2013 On the 2018ES and both sides fit like they are supposed to, no gap.
Years ago someone said that wire bracket thing on the left side was supposed to be an anchor point to tie stuff down, I have never used it.
When I do tie something to the passenger seat area I use Rok Straps attached to the passenger grab handles.

To close this thread, I had an extra rubber cover, cut it down to fill the gap, and superglued it to the box. Now I feel more confident some of the weight is being transferred to the lower brace. Took it on a 3000 mile trip last week and it worked as expected.

Is there anyway that gap is there to accommodate suspension movement ?
