OEM grip heaters stopped working

I installed the OEM grip heaters last year after purchasing the bike. They have worked fine but suddenly stopped working last week. Everything else on the bike is fine. I pulled and inspected all the wires and connections related to the grips, all good. There is no inline fuse in the plug and play set up on the OEM grips. All other fuses on the bike are fine. Any ideas??????

I bet you have a spliced wire about a 1/16" from the throttle grip. Don't ask me how I know this...

And the OEM grip plug is tied to the rear tail light fuse. Tail light work?

Ya gotta track the voltage, both positive and ground. It all starts and ends somewhere.

Well, still stumped. I used a test light and can find current from the on off switch to the wire bundle plug and back out to the right hand grip plug but nothing seems to be going to the left handgrip plug. I pulled the throttle side off and all wire are good no rips, tears or cuts anywhere.

Neither grip will heat with everything connected. I suspect at this point, unless someone has any other thoughts, this thing is not gonna have heated grips.

Thanks for the replies.

The answer lies in continuity of the circuit. Put your multimeter back on each of the +/- on the LH & RH grips and see if the circuit reads 0, or close to it. If one grip is shorted out, neither are going to work. I've not heard of any of the grips shorting out within the grip itself, normally it's a splice within the loom and you can't see it unless you cut it open near the grip.

Maybe you've done all that, but one other option before throwing it to the wind and giving up.

I did not cut open the loom near the grip just took it apart and saw no external damage to it. I will cut it open and see if there is a splice.

thx.

We have a winner ::012:: Karson you were spot on. one of the heat wires inside the loom was split just where it exited the rubber of the throttle side grip. Not enough wire to work with to solder back together so I had to cut away the molded rubber where the wire exits the hand grip and solder up the wire. I then used Shoe Goo to recreate the molded section I had to cut away. It actually worked! you cannot see the repair at all once it is all back together. Shoe Goo is used to mend the soles of rubber tennis shoes (Big 5 carries it) and it sets up just like the rubber that was there originally. I don't know if it will hold but as long as it does, I will have heated grips.

Thanks for the responses.

I know this thread is long buried but maybe someone has some useful info.

My OEM heated throttle grip started slipping (OEM throttle tube glue has failed) during a ride last weekend and as a result it started pulling on the heater wire that attaches to the grip inside the housing when the grip slipped. The wire hasn't broken fortunately, but the rubber sheath has a couple small rips in it which I've glued for now. Im just doing a little homework for the future if things start to deteriorate.

Does anyone know a source that can supply just the OEM Throttle Heated Grip? I know at one point I searched online suppliers using just the part number on the packaging for just the grip and I did find them listed as individual items, but the packaging (inc part number label) is somewhere hidden in my garage and I can't find it. It seems like a few people now have had issues with broken wires on the throttle side heated grip so perhaps someone has some leads?

Last year about this time I was doing the same thing, looking for a replacement OEM grip due to a broken wire on the throttle side. I found that Oxford now has a grip that fits this bike and I think this is a better solution.

The OEM heated grip connector comes off of the OEM fuse panel, fuse #8 (signaling system fuse).

Here is a write up on how I replaced the OEM heated grips with the Oxford Premium Adventure Heated Grips on my 2013 Tenere. See Reply #117
https://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?threads/oxford-heated-grips.3500/page-6#post-265733

I have had these grips with the Warm and Safe Heat Troller on the Tenere for 1 year and 8,000 miles now and also have had about the same setup on my 2009 DL650 VStrom for 5 years with over 70,000 miles. I have never had a problem with slipping or any other problem with them.
I used a high temp epoxy, JB Weld epoxy (600 degrees F) to mount these grips. If you do this be sure to dry fit the grips first because you will not have much time to position the grips with the epoxy on.

+1 on the broken wire. I found this thread this morning, went right to where the wire comes out of the grip molding, cut away the insulation and out popped a broken wire end. Interwebs rule! Thanks Karson! Hands were warm and toasty inside the hippo hands on the first ride of the year.
