Don't forget the Transalp from that same time period.
Honda also had the GB500TT and the GT650 Hawk around that time as well. Good pickings for sure!

Had one of those along with two NX250's. The 250 was a gem of a bike, wish the suspension was set up for someone more than 120 pounds but that little bike was my ultimate short commuter.

In the US they were supposed to be KLR competition for those wanting something a bit nicer. The low prices of the KLRs meant the Hondas didn't sell.

I have the NX650 motor in my XR650L .. much better transmission ratio for offroading.
I wish i could have used the NX chassis, i like it far better than the XR, but well too many parts wouldnt line up.

I remember all those funky early ADVish bikes LOL those days I wouldn't touch one..... In the 90s (& till present) I was all about the latest, hotness with crotchrockets (they still hold a softspot as I still own a BKing and ZH2).

Yummmm... The Hawk GT 650, CB1 400, Bandit 400, FZR 400, not necessarily a small bore kinda guy but such cool rippers from the 90s! Loved (still do) to have one for the super tight stuff I frequently rip or trackday ripper.

We ( UK ) got lots of imports that were not here officially. I think the Hawk 650 was known as the " Bros " here. Nice bike.

Same in almost every way. but ratio between 1st and 2nd in the NX is much closer making the motor WAY better for the trails.
A very popular 'upgrade' to the XR650L motor is to swap in an NX transmission (1st,2nd gears), but i happened to gain access to a full bike, so i just motor swapped.

You don't see many these days - a tad gutless unless thrashed in my experience, then very wheelie prone 2-up. Fine, if you wanted to get rid of the pillion, but generally a tad unpopular.

To my mind, the Suzuki Dr.BIG hit the spot & covered that dual sport role far better.

Back then Honda were adept at filling every segment - think 1989 PC800 Pacific Coast. An underpowered heavy old bus, developed in CA by car guys, with some innovative ideas on board, that could have been so much better. It never reached the UK officially, but now seems quite collectable, if that's your bag.

I don’t think it is a huge failure at all. This Honda is truly amazing. I saw this motorcycle at the event and it looks so much cooler.
