I have lived in the Yukon for 20 years, I have owned a variety of bikes from crotch rockets to cruisers. My passion is speed, therefore, I enjoy the crotch rocket performance and abilities. however, the Yukon roads eat up tires, the potholes have caused a few "pucker" factors that are off the scales and the cooler temps shorten the season, the result has been a serious increase in my spending on snowmobiles. With my desire to own a suitable northern bike, I have sniffed pretty hard at the GS over the last few years, but without a local dealer have declined. Prior to Tsunami fest I had a variety of trips planned for this summer and fall. I am certain the tradegdy in Japan will delay my ride and so be it. My life is pretty easy and I hope the best for Japan. I am a patient man and will await the ST arrival that will go beyond the months I had hoped.

As stated earleir I am also an avid snomobiler. I have the gear to ride at any temp. In fact this past winter I rode the Yukon Quest trail from Whitehorse to Dawson on my Venture TF and overnight temps dropped to -55 c, daytime highs of -48.

This leads me to my recent trip that involved truck trailer and snowmobile. I have travelled to Inuvik a handful of times in the non winter months and twice in the spring shoulder season. A couple of weeks ago I drove my truck/ trailer/snowmobile to Invuvik and then hopped on the sled to Tuktoyuktuk on the 200 km ice road- AWESOME. This loooong trip led me to thinking, my ST will not doubt be late, why note search out some studded tires, combine it with my heated clothing and ride Whitehorse to Tuk next year!!!

So there you have it, I have a plan and any or all of you are welcome . All that is required is to be here late march and off we go!!

Are you in???

I'll have to pass on the Ice Road Biker, but I do hope to be up there on my new XT1200 in late July.

That sounds kind of like fun, in a "I might just die" sort of way. I bet that was a very rewarding trip though, those are some serious elemental conditions.

count me out!!! i was getting chills when reading the winter story lately about the two guys riding in the dead winter way up north on some F800's. How the F_ _ _k do they keep from freezing into the form of an ice cube?

Of course, I don't like it above 75 either. I like Seattle!!!

Such a cold weather ride wouldn't be my cup of tea, but then again, I don't grok the IBA challenge either. And despite enjoying your area of the country to visit in the warmer months, I have no desire to visit there in the winter nor live there. But you sound well-suited to where you live and well-suited to the ride. Go for it.

Speaking of winter riding challenges, you might be interested in this this guy's experiences doing a Jan trip across Canada a few years back. The actual ride report starts at about post #284.

Well, I'm "committed" to riding out to Tagish today. About, oh, hmmm, uh ... maybe 60 miles or so?? I'll meet a friend and if I'm not overly uncomfortable, we will push on to Johnson's Crossing, another 35 miles or so.
It's supposed to soar up to plus 3 (that would be circa 37 °F to you non-conformist types) so we'll see. Should be okay. My ST1300 offers good protection and I'll be well dressed for the occasion. I may end up just warming up at Tagish and heading back home. Either way, I'm going for a ride today. Old dog on the move. R

WEll, I took my first "big ride" of the season yesterday. It was about 28 °F when I went into town for coffee and lunch with friends. It has soared up to 32 by the time I headed south on the highway. I stopped and added another layer and put some overboots on. Then I was pretty good. The temperature soared up to about 36 for most of the trip, about 60 miles. Warmed up at my riding buddy's place, then back to Carcross. Had a coffee and warmed up and back home by about 5:30 pm. It was enjoyable, but just a tad cool for the old dog. But a guy's gotta do ..... supposed to warm up this week finally, if you can believe the lying weather vermin.

I knew you'd want to know this. R

It was a cloudy cold day, but any ride is a good ride as long as you get back home safely and without incident. I saw two caribou, and the swans have started arriving. Yukon is a major flyway for a huge number of migratory waterfowl. We get a lot of swans in the spring and again in the fall. This is 6 Mile River, a short stretch between Tagish and Marsh Lakes. R
