S mode requires less rotation of the throttle to get the same input as T mode. If this is your first throttle by wire bike, it takes a little practice to refine your wrist input so the throttle doesn't feel like an on/off switch. Like fuel, engine braking can also be modulated by how much you close the throttle. Coming from inline fours w/o much engine braking, it does seem like a lot, but it's very, very useful in riding the S10 if you learn how to use it. I came off a FJR to the S10 and really like the engine braking. My brake pads last a long time. :)

Consider waiting a while before doing a flash. And read up on various opinions from those that have done a flash. You may love it. Typical rule of thumb is that riders that tend to use a lot of throttle rotation seem to enjoy the flash. Riders that are steady and smooth don't notice a lot of difference. It's not right or wrong, more a matter of your personal riding style.
