on my 17 the clutch is noisy as in a mechanical rotational rattle I guess you could say. Has anyone pin pointed what exactly this noise is coming from ie; clutch basket, bearings, plates? Quiet when lever is pulled in. Very annoying and shouldn’t be there. I can’t be the only owner with a noisy clutch.

My 17 ES has the same noise, all the Teneres I have heard all sound the same. Dealer says it’s normal.

I guess I’ll have to accept normal. I sure would like to know the source though doesn’t sound right to me. Cheap azz bearings?

The second gen clutch basket is a far better design than the first gen. Nothing in the basket to rattle really, as opposed to the Gen I. Haven't read of any Gen II failures. Are you sure you're not just hearing the normal chatter of the chain and other bits? Haven't heard a Tenere yet that didn't chatter.

I assume the noise is from the clutch seeing it stops when pulling the clutch lever in. I think whatever bearings the basket rides on are dog dodo.

My 2016 does it like all the others. Reminds me of a Ducati, but they had a dry clutch. I know it normal so I don't worry about it. I had a 2003 WR450 that was way louder and never touched it in 13 years, ran perfect!!

You change the tension on the timing chain when you work the clutch, the clutch discs are always dragging a little. The clutch basket is bolted with a big ass nut to the end of the crank shaft, no bearings.

Sorry Don, but almost everything you said there is wrong on so many levels...
Yes, the clutch disks always drag a little, but, the tension on the cam chain is the valve train, and the cam chain tensioner, period. The clutch has absolutely nothing to do with it. The clutch basket is NOT bolted to anything, and there IS a bearing that the basket rides on. The clutch hub is what is bolted, but to a transmission shaft, not the crankshaft.

I’ll bet the basket and hub could use some fine tuning factory isn’t going to do it

Wow. Five years and all those gear connections... Loading on and off the crank still changes things.

Try changing oil to Yamaha 10W-40 Full Synthetic next service.

The large needle roller bearing that supports the Primary Drive clutch basket at the rear and the ball/roller bearing bearing out front (side ) is more than substantial and wouldn't fail on a 2017 model .

Ride it ,don't listen to it ,,,or you will go mad trying to diagnose all the inherent noises .

This is darn good bike, should be ridden and ridden hard.

This is reassuring. I was starting to worry about the rattles my 2017 has as 15k.

BTW, how do they hold up to being ridden through winter? I jet wash mine off each weekend and spray everything with ACF50 but I notice the header flanges and nuts are looking pretty rusty already...

My new clutch and Gen 2 basket is working well , BUT now after a month or so Ive develoed a rattle in overdrive .

I used to be able to cruise in Top Gear around town , not anymore gets too blasted rattly , changing down to 3rd .

Cardan (?),joint on drive shave is fine and everything is tight to Spec .
New diff oil done .
Im wondering if I should UP the viscosity of the engine oil ?

Any one got any ideas .

Use whichever gear that gets you stay closer to or over 3000 rpm. Get below 2000 rpm and you're lugging it.

Around town (30mph) I'm working between 3rd and 4th gear, mainly 3rd. I only use 5th on faster "A" roads and 6th is only for motorway where they are long smooth stretches above 60mph. I wouldn't dream of trying to even use 5th around town and certainly not 6th. I think the noise you're hearing is the engine crying in pain!

My 2012 Tenere rattled just like my 2017 ES does. Its normal for the super Tenere. They are well built machines. The best bikes I have ever owned

Yes, its noisy. Made worse with a skid plate. I may have to apply some dampening material. Or not. I cant hear it when I'm riding.
