@Smokin RZ, I'm a little late to this party so it may be water under the bridge at this point, but your situation does sound like the classic "hard start". If you want to attempt to push start your bike again, as you let out the clutch in second gear, push the starter button at the same time to get the engine turning, then let go of the button. I have had some of the worst hard starts on my '12 as anyone, and the only way it has always started, is by pushing. Ideally, a slight downhill works wonders. LOL

Thanks I will give that a try this weekend before I start tearing down for valve adjust. And just an FYI - when I pulled out the new plugs for the compression test, there was carbon on one side of each electrode that leads me to believe there is fuel and spark.

I pulled the valve cover today and it looks like the exhaust cam jumped three teeth. The manual says there should be 4.5 links between the I and the EX with the K aligned and the hole in the intake cam aligned. I counted 7 or 8 depending how you count and the mark on the exhaust way below the head surface. Given how hard it is to see the marks and making marks on the inside of the cam, is there a visual reference somewhere so that I could get more comfortable with my diagnosis? Seems like a big jump with no valve damage. Does the exhaust usually jump? Thanks

Update: I got the valves adjusted. All four exhaust were tight and one intake was on the tight end of the range. I purchased four new shims and moved one of the exhaust sims to the intake to get it on the upper end of the range with the other three. APE manual CCT installed. Still no start. I can now push it down my alley now and jump into second without it locking up. I tried four times and heard one fire.

The good news: I took the instrument cluster apart and didn't see any corrosion or obvious damage. It suddenly started working and I can pull codes. In d61 and d62 it shows a 12 and then it scrolls through 12 different codes. d61 and d62 should show 00 if there are no codes correct? The bike has 43,700 miles.

Okay, I misread the chart, d60 is current codes and mine has 00 meaning no trouble codes. I just pulled the fuel line and hit the switch and plenty of fuel came out. Now to disconnect the ECU and reconnect and check grounds.

I just tilted the tank up and hit the starter. Instantly fired for about 1 second then stopped. I'm thinking fuel pump even though it primes.

IT RUNS!!!!!!!! I researched on the R1 forum that if fuel comes out of the outlet hose when the tank is removed, the o ring in the fuel pump is dislodged. The fuel pump will prime and you will get flow out of the hose but not enough pressure to run. Mine leaked every time I removed the tank, including the first time. I thought that was what they did. I went back into the fuel pump and it was clearly dislodged. Put it all back together and it fired off instantly the moment I hit the starter. I just hope my poor starter motor lives a while.

Apparently someone else was in there trying to troubleshoot before I got it. So, it jumped timing and then was further complicated by the dislodged O ring by someone trying to troubleshoot and me not catching it the first time I had the pump off. This is the first fuel injected bike I ever had trouble with, and the first I rescued. I've rescued plenty of old carb bikes that have been sitting. I sure learned a lot about FI bikes over the last two months.

I was starting to think about parting it out. Getting the diagnostics to work was a turning point and a big help in narrowing things down. Think about all the bikes that have been left for dead over some minor issue.

I'm wondering how it jumped timing and it appears that there was no engine damage? If so, you might want to buy a lottery ticket because that's a lucky day.

Lucky, yes, but not uncommon. I've seen several posts about Tenere jumping timing without damage. What I can't understand is it was the exhaust cam 4 teeth forward advanced. How could that happen? I could tell nobody had ever been in there since it let the factory. I can assure you I was second guessing my timing skills up to the moment it started :)

I also being following the thread and it is really good to hear that the S10 is back and RUNNING! great! Congrats!!! Enjoy it!!

Will the chain tensioner can be the reazon why this problem happened? (did not pick up a comment on the source of the problem). I do have a concern, after hearing that chain has moved 3 or 4 theed, and did not had valve damage, is this an interference engine?

Great weekend to all!
