Went to start the bike today after hibernating for the winter...

Installed a new battery that I knew it needed, she'll crank but won't do much more. Just a sputter for a split second and then back to an empty crank. Hmmmm, wonder what could be wrong.

Started down the road of checking air filter and plugs, air filter was dirty but nothing weird. Plugs looked good and were wet with fuel.

Since everything is apart, I ordered a new plugs and filters, and we'll go from there... Only other guess is maybe something crawled into the exhaust and died, but crossing my fingers on that one.

Did you charge the new battery first?
Normal they are not fully charged when new.

Plugs wet....maybe flooded...try again with WOT and fully charged batery

Try removing the fuel pump fuse. Hit the starter while the fuse is out to clear the cylinders, reinstall the fuse and try to start it again.

Battery was fully charged and had a very healthy crank, just not much more.

I have a feeling the plugs were flooded somehow. Either way, I took everything apart to check the plugs so may as well replace them before putting it back together.

Have to say, I hate working on the S10. Such a big bike, with so much empty space, and everything is way harder than it needs to be.

There is one thing everyone (maybe everyone) can agree that the BMW lateral opposed bikes are easier to service.

Makes you wonder why dealer servicing costs so much on a Beemer. It's all stuck out in the breeze! While plugs and valve clearances are a PITA on the S10, at least you don't need to go in there very often!

Nothing is wrong with the bike. Nothing was wrong with it when you parked it for the Winter, eh?

You just need to open the throttle when trying to start the bike. This is true for everyone, EVERY SINGLE TIME THE BIKE DOESN'T WANT TO START RIGHT UP. Don't stop and then try again, that is a recipe for failure and flooding. The moment you realize the bike isn't catching, open the throttle to 3/4 to full and continue to crank. Don't stop and try again, the first time you try to start it, while cranking, open the throttle. Keep cranking until it fires up and rpms come up.

Bike was fine when parked about five months ago.

I let her crank for a while, with opening the throttle, but who the hell knows. After 13 or so winters, this is the first time I've had an issue starting a bike after hibernation.

Mine behaves like this, new battery etc,the last time I had to leave it for 7 days before it would fire, once they get too much fuel in the cylinders they will not fire I have found,I think the battery rating on the S10 is wrong it needs a bigger swing on Initial start,I got Aprilia twins and I had GS bmw,s for years never had this trouble with em.Some people fit YUASA YTZ14S same size but CCA of 230AMP.

Threw in new plugs and air filter, and she's running. I suspect the plugs were just flooded. Well, she started once I remembered to plug the fuel pump back in.

Of course, I proceeded to cross thread one of the crash bar threads when putting it back together. Now waiting on a tap

So it was in fact the hard start scenerio many have had over the years. For sure when time to replace the battery put in the YTZ14S, not the 12S. Can't imagine why Yamaha continues to believe in and fit the YTZ12S, when the YTZ14S costs the same and works better.

I did put a YTZ14S equivalent battery, but the battery was not in fact the culprit here.
