Just got my tracking number, my skid plate will be here tomorrow!
I would ask the dealer if they would put the skid plate on the same time they are doing the bottom pan. Adds about 15-20 mins to the job, but while they are at it, why not just "get er done", and be done with it. Unless you want to show some TLC to your new bike and get to know her.

I know it goes without saying, but before you ride your bike away from the dealer again, make real sure that all the oil has being removed from your tyres . With any still on them it would be a real shame to slid it down the road.
A good riding friend of mine had a similar thing happen to his Africa Twin, he hit something underneath, on the slab, ( no reinforced plate on his ) but he hardly felt it, anyway before the oil light had come on, unbeknown to him, it had leaked on to his rear tyre, we came to a RH bend, he lent it over & down he went. Oil was everywhere, properly just the same as like yours was on your posted picture.
Enjoy your new toy, & ride safe , eh. :)

Just got my AltRider skid plate in the mail yesterday. So I'll be ready for when the bike is finished at the dealer. I just called them to get a status update and UPS is taking their time getting the parts to them so that's the only real holdup. Also got the good news that the labour will be covered on the job so that'll take off like $110 or so.

Called my dealer yesterday for an update and the parts are the hold up as I knew. UPS lost the initial shipment (go figure). So after Yamaha got that confirmation they expedited the shipment and the dealer told me they could be here as early as today but most likely early next week. So there's a chance I'll have my bike back before Christmas!

UPS delivery is usually a disaster this time of the year.

Hey njdevils1990. Sorry to hear about your damage. that sucks. Hope it is fixed very soon. these bikes are very vulnerable under there. I have a skid plate of sorts under mine but i am planning on building a frame to go under the thing and mount something substantial under there. I have actually picked the bike up off the ground 4 times that i remember from rocks flipping up taller than the ground clearance. I went down one time because of it and actually smashed the oil filter. I have hammered and straightened the skid pan and mounting brackets out several times. I have been very lucky to not damage the motor.

Very interesting thread thanks. Makes my fitting of a skid plate even more urgent! I’m hoping Metal Mule will come up with something after Christmas but if they don’t which skid plate is regarded as most substantial?

From my understanding I went with an AltRider skid plate as it doesn't mount to the bottom engine pan at all, it mounts to the front if the engine case from what it looks like and the rear mounts to what looks like the center stand mounting points. I could be wrong slightly but the important part is it doesn't mount to the bottom pan.

Thanks. Does the Altrider interfere with the use of the main stand at all? Not that my bike came with a main stand but I will be getting one soon. Pretty essential on these bikes

He's right, it doesn't, but keep in mind, it's still just an aluminum skid plate; not designed for hard core off road protection. I have the Altrider, and I like it. It give me the protection that "I" need. But, as I've said before, mine's a pavement princess; curbs and road debris being my biggest enemies.

Mine will be 95% on road and the other 5% will be light "off road" like dirt roads and such. So for me the AltRider will be perfect.

Another bit of protection you'll want to look into is a set of crash bars. My opinion is that it may be more important than the skid plate. I am definitely more likely to tip over or drop it than what happened to you. These are what I'm using. They allow battery access without removal, but there are others that do too.

Nowadays, I only ride in good weather. And, since this part of Texas doesn't have many "bad" weather days, I'm good to go.
