Just took the plastic skid plate off and looks like it cracked right above the mounting screw that dips down a little below the pan. Seems like a little bit of a poor design by Yamaha. I've got nothing against them though and still love this bike after the short 123 miles I've ridden it so far. I'm thinking as long as nothing internally was damaged it'll be probably around a $500 repair so I'll just pay out of pocket unless they can do some magic and get it covered under warranty.

Wow, that was a pretty good hit. I doubt that anything internal was damaged, and it will be unlikely to get them to cover it under the warranty. Most likely just a new pan, and your good. Skid plate in the very near future will prevent this from ever being an issue in the future.

First question would be, how crazy are you going to be on the bike. Just road, or road, light off road, or crazy skill off road. That will dictate how much of a plate you will want. Most important is getting a plate that attaches to the frame, not the engine case. Lots of threads. I like my AltRider plate..

Thanks for the update but still feel shitty that it happened so soon into your ownership and that it happened at all. If dealership and Yamaha say no, the pan is a relatively easy DYI. If i remember correctly, the last few pages on the Big Tenere Thread on Advrider, (page 2028) a guy just replaced his because the dealership overtightened his oil drain bolts. There was one hidden bolt somewhere on the pan that he couldn't find right away. Good luck with everything.

I'll second HeliMark's choice of Altrider. It's not a hard core plate, but it's good enough for me. My "what was Yamaha thinking" complaint is the oil filter at the FRONT of the motor. The Altrider skid plate does need to be removed to remove the filter, but it's not a big deal.

Yep, Alt rider plate is working nice. It takes a hard hit and you just bang it back in place. After it wears out I'll be getting a RideOn plate.

Just got a call from my Yamaha dealer. It's not covered due to it being the result of something hitting the bike which they could see the impact on the skid plate and the mounting screw being bent about 45°. It's only going to be $430 for parts and labour. Not the worst thing, could have been worse, especially if I had slipped on the oil that coated the rear wheel. I should have the bike back by this weekend. Once I get home from work I'm going to order a proper skid plate.

I hope you put this behind you and start enjoying the bike soon.

Definitely the lesser of the two evils!
Thank goodness it was not a crack in the upper engine block.
Consider this a $430 reminder regarding the need for a skid-plate.
I would try and get some warm & fuzzy from this Yammy dealer considering you just bought a rather pricey new scoot from them.
Perhaps they can comp your upcoming 600 mile service or give you a store discount on gear, parts or accessories.
All in all, get that skid plate and crash bars and do your thing!

I have read this by others also, They must have changed the design at one time. Mine would be a very early batch and I have no trouble at all changing the oil filter with the plate on.

The OP said very little off roading for him, The ALT plate is bare minimum for off road use. They do get bent up easy.

Stopped into my dealer just to get an update and the parts were ordered Monday, they're expecting them there by Thursday. Found out they gave me a discount on the services since the bike was only 3 days owned. Also told them to submit the warranty claim anyways dispite the clear indication it was from an impact. Worse case is Yamaha says no and I'm paying for it anyways. So there may be some luck in me after all.

My filter has about 3/4" clearance from the front of the plate. I can't remember how long the threads are, but I don't think there's enough room. I too, am not likely to venture very far off road. Mainly for curbs, and parking stops, and small children. I DID like that there were no cut outs, or vent holes in the leading face of the plate; nothing to catch on.
