I just joined the site and wanted to say hello. I have not yet put a deposit down on a new S 10 and really like what I have seen so far from riders reviews. I have a few bikes at this time so this will be my 4th!

Good luck with the new site

I'm a waiter too, I did this with my '98 R1 and my '03 FJR so it's familiar. I'm just here trying to learn. I'm headed to the dealer today to put down a deposit. I've never had an adventure bike but this one seems to speak to my two major concerns: a good dealer network and a narrow, powerful engine. It looks a little heavy for intense off roading but looks plenty capable for what I have planned for it. Looks like I have a few months to plan a trip or two until it gets here. I think I'll get the black.

Thought I recognized that avatar. So, I am getting a black one but it'll be May of next year before I get to ride it. Oh well, I can dream of merging my dirt bike and the FJR in the meantime. I came over here to get a little inside info from actual S10 riders so I'll know what to tweak when the big girl gets here. 8)

Pleased you've found it, welcome!

Call me a dumbass, but I have to ask about your name - what engine is it that has 20 valves? I'm thinking either a dual OHC inline 5 of some sort of a 4 cylinder with 5 valves per cylinder, neither of which to my knowledge exist. Just curious.

You need to get out more! ;D

My 2006 R1 has 5 valves per cylinder as does each and every Yamaha FZ-1 to this day. I've had that handle ever since my days on the R1 forum while I was waiting for my 1998 R1 (also 5v/cyl) to arrive. It too arrived in May after a seemingly interminable wait.

Can I blame Google? :) I did a quick search for info on the R1 engine and *thought* what I found said it was 4 valves/cylinder. Yeah well, I said you could call me a dumbass.

And yes, I definitely need to get out more. Two small kids will keep you down...way down...but it's all good.

The current R1 does have 16 valves, has since 2007. The only bikes currently available for sale with 5v/cyl are the Yamaha FZ1 and the WR/YZF 250. Here's some useless trivia: The YZF/WR 250 and FZ1 share not only their 5 valve heads but also the same bore and stroke. So a YZF 250 is like an FZ.25
