I’ve been leaning towards a BMW GSA for a few years now (kinda my magnet towards adv riding after riding my friend’s 2012). I come from years of cruiser style (Harley) riding (I know, I know), yet growing up riding YZ-80/125 dirt bikes.

Last year I ventured out and bought a 2013 S10. I rode it some miles and wasn’t entirely pleased with it, solely personal. I sold it thinking I needed something smaller, so I bought a Tiger 800XC thinking I would “off-road” more with a “lighter” bike...well I don’t. I miss the S10 bad! So, I’ve been scoping the forums to find a BMW GSA, and I keep coming back to the S10...specifically a Gen 2. Well today I think I found one. It is a SWEET bike! I am hoping for some advice. I’ve found my riding suits a larger style adv bike. I cannot justify the GSA price/maint costs/questionable reliability...etc etc after seeing this bike today.

Thoughts?

Bike is BRAND NEW, leftover 2017.
Asking $13,700

It’s the exact color I’ve had my eye on. It comes with;
GIVI Panniers
GIVI engine guards (which I had on my 2013 S10 and was pleased)
GIVI skid plate

The manager at the dealer was super accommodating and rides a S10 as well, and knew a lot about the bike, offering some suggestions I think I can negotiate with such as PIAA lights, larger windscreen, and winglets.

I need to be swayed here. I really like my Tiger 800XC but really want the smoothness of a Gen 2 S10. Good deal? Change my mind....

Thanks for reading!

I have just returned to a S10, purchasing a brand new 2016 Anniversary yellow ES model.

I did have a 2015 model ES S10, but after a 20.000 km's trip 2 up and towing a camper trailer, I foolishly traded it in on a 2017 Triumph Explorer XCA.

It only took 1 x trip of 16,000 km's, and 6 months to decide I wanted back on a Super Ten.

I will never go back to a GSA, after a fork stanchion failure nearly killed me, and the attitude of BMW when it first happened(It must of been my fault for riding it in the dirt) I will never support that brand again.

Only you can answer your question, but that brand new 2017 farkled up already does sound like a good deal.

Enjoy

Least expensive brand new S10 I have found is in Alabama and priced at $11,600. I think once you factor in the cost of having to travel there and back, adding the same farkles that are on the 2017 here, and maybe some dealer fees...I am within reason, if not almost the same price as the 2017 listed here. So in essence I think it’s a good deal.

Good deal, especially with the accessories.
And it's good if possible to support the local dealer wo they can support you.
Sounds like a winner!

I have to agree with him on all points. I do find it humorous that so many have gone to "greener pastures" only to return to THE....one and only....Super Tenere. ::001:: ::022::

If it were me....I'd look at that 2014 ES in the "For Sale" section that has 1300 miles and farkled to the max with extended warranty for only $10,700.00 in TN. Other great dealios in the For Sale section.

Btw...similar bike lineage here. Rode YZ80 in my youth. Rode cruisers then got a 2012 S10 Loved it now have a 2015. Did a lot of research and comparisons on all the ADV bikes and S10 did it for me. Especially the reliability factor.

Other than ES, any diff in a 2014 to a 2017 model I should be aware of?

I think I’ve found a barely used gen 2 and awaiting more info to ensure sale. I’m excited! Will update. Thanks for feedback!

So the barely used Gen2 I found went away for seller reasons unknown. Seemed too good to be true. Today I test rode a 2014 BMW GSA and found the ergos perfect, but an annoying vibration in the handlebars I later researched to be “normal” for all, yet disappointing for me, especially at that price point. I also researched several potential issues I won’t get into, not found at all on the Super Tenere.

I have a test ride scheduled next Tuesday on a 2016 Super Tenere ES the owner of my local dealer has for a personal demo bike. He rides a Tenere as his personal bike, so there lies some credibility and respect from the get go.

I am hoping to strike a deal here.

So many people get drawn towards the GS, based on gizmos like TFT dash & quick shifter these days. That's the way of the World I guess, if even HD have noticed the need to broaden their outlook. Anyway, you will find the ES a joy I am sure & more versatile IMHO.

So this was never about “going to greener pastures” as it was trying a different bike for specific reasons. The reliability of a Super Tenere is top notch, no question. Several major companies compete with this market and are very successful attaining the satisfaction of what people want on an individual basis. Mine was refinement I guess, and I think I found it.

Having owned a previous 2013 S10, currently riding a Triumph Tiger 800XC, and a Harley StreetGlide...here are my thoughts;

2016 Super Tenere ES demo -

The Good
- lots of power
- S mode is VERY snappy and quick on the throttle
- T mode is great for me personally, especially on the highway
- Cruise control is the most seamless I’ve ever experienced on any bike...period no question
- Zero buffeting (had GIVI airflow installed) and excellent overall body wind protection
- Shifting is absolute butter!! No 1st gear clunk, choppy shifting or difficulty finding neutral
- Weight of bike disappears as soon as you starting going 5mph. Short slow turns are no problem
- No shakiness or bike vibration
- Exhaust sounds good

The Bad
- stock seat is meh
- Feels like the windshield and dash are far in front of you
- Mild buzz in handlebars
- Didn’t get to take off pavement

*in defense of the Super Tenere, I currently have Rox risers and a Sargent seat on my Tiger so in light of my “bad” comments, that comparison isn’t really fair.

All this said, I’m researching if you can get handlebar end weights for the Super Tenere, like something from Bark Busters maybe?

In my opinion the Super Tenere wins over the BMW GSA for reasons of known reliability, price, smooth shifting (2014 GSA I tested had very clunky shifting and difficulty finding neutral), seamless cruise control, known reliability, lower maint costs, and known reliability.

I will get one and put a Sargent seat and Rox risers on....and I love the GIVI Airflow!
