My opinion is that the Honda was designed with a different mission in mind. Obviously the AT was designed for a more play in the dirt/off-road role than to be loaded up like a pack mule . The Tenere has a huge front end weight bias. Which, when it's loaded with luggage and/or a passenger, the weight is more balanced. They're both called adventure bikes, but they're built for different adventures.
I had a modest amount of camping gear on my AT (tent, sleeping bag and some clothes) and the heavy items were on the passenger seat to keep the weight centralized. Far from being loaded up like a pack mule but it still handled very poorly. Like Greg said, the rear shock doesn't do its job. Maybe that's been improved on the new one.

If I was buying a new adventure bike it most likely would be the Honda Africa Twin DCT.
But right now I suspect my 2018 S10 ES will very likely be the last adventure bike for me.
It would be an adventure when the DCT stopped working like mine did. Another guy I know saw a Goldwing DCT being towed recently when that one stopped shifting too.

Yes I am aware of some serious problems with DCT but they do seem to be pretty rare and all the cases that I’m aware of were fixed reasonably soon by Honda under warranty, I believe as time goes on these problems will become less and less common. It will be interesting to watch the DCT future.
