Hello Guys,

I am running a set of Trekriders that the previous owner had put on when I bought my bike... I see that the wear bars are a bit off to the side on this tire. There are a couple of spots at the dead center of the tire that are balding out, but the rest of the treads are good and there is a healthy gap to the wear bars... About to set off on a 700 mile trip and wondering if guys running this tire would be concerned?

Advice / suggestions appreciated!

I would not go on that tire.
Not because I was afraid the tire would be totally worn out, (It could happen, but then a new tire on the trip is possible)
But because a very short nail or other object would very easy give you a flat tire.

A photo would help. How much tread depth is left in inches or mm?

Here is a pic. The actual wear bar (I am not at home, so couldn't show a pic WITH the wear bar) is off center on either side and at this wear bar, there is about 2 mm of tread depth left.... thanks!

Also, that's the point of MAXIMUM wear that I'm showing in the pic... at other points even right on the center of the tread, there's more rubber (tread depth available)... so this part has somehow worn unevenly...

Just looking at the picture I would not leave on a 700 mile trip with that tire. The center looks to badly worn, if you happen to get in a lot of rain that tire will be dangerous. Close to home I would keep using it for awhile but not on a 700 mile trip.

I recently had a set of Mitas Dakar’s with 10,000 miles on them , many folks get claim they get 12,000 miles out of them, they still had a long ways to go to the wearbars but the center seemed way to worn in my opinion.

That spot with maximum wear will continue to wear faster than the rest of the tire and it will definitely be the first place the cords start showing.

So my experience with the Trekriders is very mixed. On pavement they grip well and are fairly smooth, not to much nose ether. The wear seems good I have 3300 miles on them an they look new still (I got close to 9000 out of me Tourance EXPs for reference). Dry gravel roads are great, very stable & predicable. But this is were things change, on larger loose rocks (golf ball size) they move and spin more than you’d think they should and on mud, and I don’t just mean deep mud, I mean any type mud they seem to have zero lateral grip. Since I live in New England and mud is quite common I’m looking into replacing them.

Just thought I'd come back and share an update - I didn't have an opportunity to change tires before the trip, so I made a list of all Yamaha dealerships enroute my trip and decided to go anyway....

In the end, when I was back from my trip, the tires were still not down to the cords... by the time I was back, there was no tread left in the center at all... the next ride was to the shop to replace the tires!

Thanks for the good advice - I was surely watching the tire at every break to be sure it was behaving OK and not dying on me....
