Going on a two week ID BDR this summer. Looking for some extra "OMG" insurance purchased for 2 weeks or their minimum length of time. Im not in that industry and don't know the 'terms', but looking for helicopter extraction and hospital coverage, Etc... Anyone have suggestions on where to start looking, maybe 'key words' I need to search? Maybe there are folks that have purchased this type insurance before, or we have someone that is in the industry?

Incase a bear likes the taste of my toes............... I don't need a $75K helicopter ride out of the boonies........

Thanks Team !

Membership for a year is $100. I don't know of any short term coverage options but $100 is cheap insurance IMO.

+1. This will be the cheapest way. I pay $6/yr, but that's through the city I worked for. I'd just Google the nearest medical air transport where you're going and contact them.

Im traveling across the US... Im looking for insurance that will cover any part of that trip from A-Z.. I might be in a big town, or I might be 1-2 hour helicopter ride.... It's a 5500-6000 Mile trip..... Thanks for the info so far....

I have SAR coverage through the Garmin Inreach subscription. It covers myself for $50,000 per incident/ $100,000 per year.
It costs $25 annually.
I also have added accident-insurance through my place of employment, but would have to look that up when I get home. It used to be offered through Afflac, but they switched to a different partner this year.

DING, DING, DING, we have a winner. I am assuming that there's no restriction on location(s). And $25? No brainer.

I wonder if $50,000 would actually cover a helicopter ride ? About Five years ago friends wife got a 10 mile helicopter ride that supposedly cost $60,000
I had a friend need a helicopter ride that was about 40 min ride, was told it was almost $70K , just for the Helicopter ride.... If Im 200+ miles out in the remote wilderness, that would be much harder than a normal metropolitan area for the flight. It might be $50K-$100K ride....... Who knows, I guess it would also depend how many hours / fuel to find us. When we road the AZBDR, my buddy flipped his Tenere off the side of a mountain. After we gave our GPS coordinates, it took about 16-17 hours for them to find us.

We came across a group on the COBDR last year in a remote area. He had a compound leg fracture, he needed a Helicopter... His friends were just looking for any type of vehicle to get him to an area that a helicopter could land.... Some of these BDR's are out in the super boonies. I must think what it takes to get help in these areas. If you don't have those answers before you leave, you might die out there....

I have a similar plan through my SPOT Gen3 subscription. It's called Global Overwatch and Rescue plan, costs $30/year. The 16 page policy can be viewed on the SPOT website...might be worth a look.

I have had this in the past... I would like a more "robust" plan I pay for the two weeks gone... I know someone will sell me the insurance I want with crazy big numbers. Ive just started to poke around to find what Im looking for. Some of these plans just dont offer enough "real world" coverage.... I want lots of real world coverage for two weeks....

Time to call Lloyds of London ! ....................... LOL

We live in strange times, insurance for our insurance. I had a Routine hernia surgery. My first surgery. Googled how much If I paid out of pocket. 5 to 8 grand. Ran it threw my insurance. The final tab came to 60k. Magically my out of pocket was reached for the year. 7 k My max out of pocket.

My advice be careful because medical bills can be more painful than the crash.

My neighbor forgot to put gas in his car. His wife went into labor at 2 am. He ran out on the way to the hospital. The fire dept delivered the child on the side of the road. Never saw their doctor. Received a bill from their Dr. For the delivery a real big one.

Yeah, I'm not sure how this isn't insurance fraud. They openly have different prices for the same procedure.

AXA will sell you a platinum plan with $1,000,000 for evacuation costs for somewhere around $300-400 I'd imagine. Be sure you tell them what you're up to in writing just to be extra careful.

Reading the reviews of that company, they don't seem that trustworthy, but the policies do at least exist.

I have bought coverage for trips through Canada 2 different years because my regular health insurance doesn’t cover in foreign countries , first time was $1,000,000 coverage for one month $100 , the agent selling the coverage admitted they were unaware of anyone ever collecting anything.

The second time I paid $150 for one month of $150,000 coverage, when I asked why it was so much more expensive than last time they said because your over age 65. Both policy would supposedly cover transporting my body and equipment home if I got killed in a foreign country.

I understand in Canada you can now opt for euthanasia if you can’t afford the medical bills?

Not quite. I don’t have the rules in front of me but I believe euthanasia is an option only after a doctor agrees that you are capable of making that decision (no brain injury or disease) and you have a terminal medical condition. I doubt a doctor would sign off if you simply can’t afford the treatment.

Well like I told my wife in the emergency room. (It was 28 hours before we were seem). Look around I am pretty sure we are the only ones with insurance and we are paying for everyone else. I think payment should figure into triage as well.

I'm not a guy for giving up on anything. But I've seen too many people suffer, for entirely too long, with no hope of recovery. It does nobody any good. That is a much needed common sense option.

That being said. I'd have a terminal condition. The day after I opt out, they find a cure, and the fountain of youth.
