Hello guys, I´ve been looking for this in other forums and videos with no luck. I've been having this problem with my ST it has a metallic rattle sound and has a higher pitch as you can hear in the video when I'm going down hill with no throttle, or when I brake with the engine.

My ST started sounding like this after a ride like a month ago, it didn´t sound like that before and I´ve had it since 2016. I already changed the CCT to the manual one and it didn´t change. My mechanic started the bike without the clutch and it still sounded the same, so the clutch basket is not the problem. Has anyone have the same issues?

My ST is a 2013 with 67.000 km, most of my driving is on road.

The video has descriptions where the sound is present. The loudest I could get the sound is in 0:39

Welcome to the forum! I encourage you to complete the requested tasks in your mail folder

Regarding your post. It would help folks to know more about your ST including odometer readings, year, model and your history with the bike. Also, if you have not yet done so, please take advantage of the search functions available. Many issues have already been raised and discussed previously and reading those threads is a big time saver

Have you ever had the camchain replaced ? Manual CCT or not, if it is already too streched, it won't fix it.

My chain was replaced at 73.000 km and it rattled quite a bit on decceleration ( never in startup ). When that was done the CCT was almost on the limit of what it could stretch.

No the chain has not been replaced, some mechanic told me that it didn´t have to be changed, just the CCT, but ill dig into it.

Thanks for the reply!

The noise started "after" changing the cct? ... it sounds like a single valve hit. put a hose in your ear and try to "centralize" the noise in one place

41,000 miles is too soon for needing a chain. Sounds like the tensioner didn't get tight enough, that's too much noise. It made the noise before the tensioner was replaced? The same noise? How's power? Any loss of power I might suspect jumped timing. That's more chatter than my '12 gave me on cold start up. I went with a mechanical tensioner, it's been very quiet for the last 50,000 miles.

The sound started before I changed the CCT, my mechanic changed it for the mechanic tensioner thinking that was the problem. He got the timing right and I haven´t felt a loss of power or anything strange differente from the noise you can hear. I don´t think when people say it is a tenere it´s supposed to be noisy is a fix for the bike because I have had it for 5 years and it didn´t sound like that.

Thanks for your answer!

Did you eliminate the basics? Like good oil, TBS, premium fuel. We’re the valve clearances checked on time? Loose skidplate?

The chain WILL eventually stretch to the point where the CCT, manual or not, won't be able to take the slack off. Depending on riding style and type of use it can take longer for it to be needed, but it won't last forever.

the Super 10 has the noisiest motor of any motorcycle i have ever owned. They are scary sounding even after putting thousands of miles on them. But on the other hand it has been rock solid reliable for me. Mine makes all kinds of crazy sounds but i don't notice it a lot unless i ride one of my other bikes. On all my bikes over the years and even on my trucks i have used this to locate the rattle knock sounds that come out of engines. I use a long screw driver put it different places on the motors and put my ear to the handle. On my super T i can hear the cam chain spinning i can hear the very light tick of the valves and i can hear the bottom end noises. On my bike the clutch makes most of the noise and it is easily located using the screw driver method. I bet you can isolate the noise on yours that way. Keep in mind you will hear all the noises no matter where you put the screw driver but when you hit the location it is coming from it will definitely be a lot louder to you. Yep pretty shade tree but has worked for me for years.

Certainly sounds like something CC related. Could it be one of the tensioner shoes (aka CC dampers) is worn - familiar to Harley TC 88 owners, but almost unheard of with Super 10s. Parts #14 &15 here..........

I guess it could be the result of CC stretch, but strange at this mileage. At least it seems the cam chain hasn't jumped a tooth if full power remains available, but don't push your luck until this has been investigated in detail. The only solution is to take a look, check the CCT & both dampers - remember if there is significant wear, this could produce debris as well as chain link wear which will need addressing.
