GtP, good write up on the AT and your reasons ( had to translate your cannuck into 'merican before I really understood ) for going Big Red . the AT is a very good bike , some people don't like chains , they are more maintenance to do. but you can regear by changing sprockets to enhance the performance you want. and that can be a big plus. enjoy.

thanks

both new choices had chain. The GS didn't factor in, neither did the 2nd gen tenere.
Less weight means no shaft. Put 19k k on my FJ09. Chain didin't bother me. I have 60 hard off road hours on my xc300, I lube it after every ride. To each his own.
Should be a great bike.

GTS?
Google That Sxxt!

have not decided if I will buy another bike but if I do it will be smaller and lighter so probably chain driven. I have no plans to sell the tenere . but could add another small bike to the house hold.

While I'm not ready to give up the shaft or live with tube tires, I like the AT. Very nice!
Hope to meet you in person some day.

Coming along nicely !
Exactly What model Zumo do you have ? I finally spent the crazy big money on a Zumo 595 this year, other than the crazy price I’m liking it so far.

small bikes are perfect for those caliche roads of Gonzales tx. them be snot roads when wet , not worth tax payer dollars to make a goat trail . so when I fall the smaller bike will not crush me like my tenere could.... carrot and myself tried Gonzales county dirt roads after a rain , 4x4 could hardly stay on the roads. some how we survived. I'm not getting rid of my tenere, I enjoy it to much. but a smaller bike can be a great bike to explore on. my neighbor is a well known guy in the dual sport world, he organizes a lot of great rides that the tenere would be a liability. poor carrot had to listen to my whining all day long as we tried to navigate wet caliche . lots of great dirt roads as long as they are not wet in Gonzales county Texas.

I see. I would say I'm not a beginner off road rider BUT, I hate mud and will do anything to avoid it. Too easy to just stay on the pavement like I will.do tomorrow.

jmz, you and I have actually met once at the steak house in Winchester , and I believe you know carrot . next time you talk to him ask him about our mud ride in Gonzales , we were having a good time but damn , those roads were bad. carrot is better in those conditions than I am , he lives on a dirt road..... so he practices everyday.... some where in the archives of this forum we did a ride report on that day.....

Timely post as he is riding to and eating with a group at that same place today. We started riding together with you after lunch that day. But didn't get far before me, him and Carrot broke off to ride at a more spirited pace. Like Sammy Hagar says "I can't.. drive...55" Lol

We rode Sand Hill Rd that day. Have Carrot take you there for some off pavement fun. The name is fitting and if it hasn't rained in awhile might make you wish for mud instead.

Well, I'll be sorry to lose your posts on fixing things on the Super Tenere; some of your blog entries have been invaluable to me, and I've printed them out and made them a part of my service manual. No doubt the AT guys will now be able to benefit from whatever maintenance you do on the Africa Twin. Thanks for producing a pretty helpful blog.

I'd be hard pressed to go back to chain, and definitely not to tubes, but after a few long stretches of riding in sand on the S10, lighter would definitely be a plus. Enjoy the new ride!

thanks for the kind words. Some of the blog posts touched 10k views which is pretty sweet! Glad I could help out.
Chain, not an issue, tubes, TPITB!!, but i'm doing an outex kit shortly, so they will be tubless.
The weight difference is amazing. It's like a reliable 950 super enduro ::015::

silver bullet, thanks for the memory jog, I remember that now , I live in Buda and had to go that direction and I can ride fast and do on occasion . I have this problem called a commercial drivers license , got to protect my record or work at 7/11. I know of a few roads near there that make sandhill road look tame. that area of Caldwell county ( south east part of county ) is the sand hills . nothing but sugar sand . so if the choice was sugar sand or wet caliche hard as it is for me to say it, give me caliche. I was off today and I ended up at carrots place . great day for a ride.

CDLs shouldn't count when you're riding a 600lb bike. A few years back "they" tried to pass some legislation that would allow a Texas CDL driver to keep tickets off of their record if they weren't operating a commercial vehicle when they received the ticket. The insurance companies overruled it.

Nice looking Tenere there, lol. I have a better photo of that day. Three smiling faces since was only a warning given. Want me to post it?
