I'm wondering if the cover blowing might have done something to the rear brake lever or possibly the front? Probably un-related coincidence and superstition. After looking at all the 'fixes' here I'm despairing taking it to the dealer under warranty. I will use the method described to check for fault codes and see if there are any. And I'm sure it will work fine when I take it in to the dealer. This seems to be a difficult finicky problem for this motorcycle. Everything else has worked fine, though. I'm assuming there's nothing from Ma Yamaha on this?
Sorry to hear you're having issues. CHECK THE SIMPLE STUFF FIRST. Sorry to yell, but really, the conditions you describe make me want to double/triple check that the brake pedal is fully returning to the up position and that the switches are not sticking for the pedal or the lever. 90% of CC issues are just this simple, a bit of crud that keeps the brake light on and tells the system to not engage the CC because the brakes are on, which is a signal to disable CC.

Are you positive that your brake light isn't on when you're getting the flashing CC light?

Have you checked the codes? Nice write up on how to do it just a bit earlier in this thread. It's really not that common a problem as it may appear, but a few have had a difficult time sorting weird issues related to the CC.

Before I add my experience & solution that seems to have worked for me just want to thank all the critical thinkers that have collectively worked thru some obviously complicated issues/diagnostics! My 2014 ES (23k kms) first displayed the blinking cc light 2 months ago randomly & intermittently & would resolve itself thru restarting the bike, restoring functionality...but never any error code. My 1st attempt to solve the problem was to check all switch adjustments & clean all switches with electronic cleaner (without disassembly) & abs sensors but during the next 2k km trip, a month later, it's occurrence increased, but still returning to functioning status after restarts. Still no error codes were stored, so this time I attempted to duplicate the issue by manually apply the front & rear brakes while on the center stand & not running & I got lucky & observed that the front brake switch would randomly stick in the on position (brake lights stay on) & generate a 090 error code (interesting because no error codes were displayed previously. This time I disassembled the front brake switch assembly to get access to the 2 micro switches inside that are operated by sequential paddles (cc switch 1st, followed by brake switch last)....cleaned them with cleaner while manually manipulating the switches hoping to get cleaner to the internals. NOTE: if you operate the brake micro switch independent of the cc micro switch an 090 error codes is generated, so it appears the bike diagnostics wants to see the 2 operate in correct sequence. ALSO NOTE: when reinstalling the micro switches into the assembly be sure to depress the protruding assembly actuating tab that interfaces with the brake lever BEFORE snapping the assembly cover/micro switches in place, to avoid contact with the actuating paddles! Otherwise you risk damaging or breaking off the protruding micro switch activation tab housed in the rubber boot. I thought I had snapped off the one on the brake switch....luckily I was able to reinsert into the micro switch restoring function. The brake switch assembly is $184 Canadian & the clutch assembly is $230, both special order from Japan with 2-3 weeks eta...yikes! So far so good, no more flashing cc light or sticking brake light...but only a few 100 km of riding...will update if problem returns. Thanks again, I would not have known where to start without this thread!

I have a blinking cruise control icon which of course knocks the cruise control off. I turned on the ignition switch and set the cruise control on and started squeezing the front brake lever and the icon began to blink and an error code 090 appeared on the dashboard. I tried to manipulate the rear brake and nothing happened. I am guessing the front brake switch is the culprit. Is that assembly easy for a non-mechanic to replace? And, what is the part number? Yamaha 2015 Super Tenere ES.

At this time we can only hope, but I will not be surprised if the front brake light switch part number is superseded in the near future. I know there have been other causes for "CC light blinkey", but the overwhelming culprit has been the front brake light switch. Add me to the list.

Same here. After actuating all the switches on the center stand to figure out the cause. I ordered a new front brake switch. It's been working fine now for about 600 miles.

After 600+ miles my cc started blinking again. The first time I checked it, the rear brake light was on and activating rear brake didn't turn it off, but activating front brake did. It happened a couple more times but the rear brake light wasn't on when it was blinking. Guess I'll take it to the dealer, but I'm not liking that. There's Ride Now Powersports in Tucson and the one in Sierra Vista - Desert Powersports, I think. Not fond of either place and I know this is going to be a headache because they won't be able to make the cc light blink.

This seems to be a fairly common problem and has been tossed around quite a bit in this forum. Yamaha is still in denial about it. there may be more than one cause. What I've ruled out thus far is a problem with the ECU. A few seem to have resolved the problem by changing the front brake light switch. As I studied the problem by reading threads and discussing it at length with a remarkably good mechanic at my local dealership was something going on with the front wheel speed sensor

While recently changing out the front tire, I thoroughly cleaned the speed sensor disk and pickup with CRC Brakleen. There was a thin layer of calcium chloride over the disk and pickup. Calcium chloride is commonly used on gravel roads for dust control and it is miserable crap to get off the bike, not to mention its corrosive nature.
With everything put back together I hit the road, and thus far have gone about 1K miles without the cruise control malfunction. I can't say it is the only fix, but it is one that is quite easily done with little cash outlay and effort.

Hi, I am so grateful for all of this information. I have a 2017 Tenere ES with only 3500 miles on it. I just noticed tonight, while riding on the Interstate, that my cruise will not engage. The light is solid and there are no other lights currently on. I am thinking maybe the rear brake switch is dirty or out of adjustment as I was out riding some technical stuff off-road last weekend and laid it down. I had an issue with the brake lights staying on afterwards. No, it wasn’t a girl on a Tenere riding her brakes like an old granny. The rear brake switch was out of adjustment. It was adjusted and the brake lights are back to normal. Now the issue with the cruise...which may or may not have been related to the original problem. I know, first world problems, right? I’ll mess with it and let you know the outcome. I am hoping I won’t need to take a trip to the dealer.

I took my '16 into a dealer in Tucson and they ordered a front brake switch. After having it for 3 days... When I rode it home, the cc dashlight was flashing. Next day I sprayed some silicone on the rod that activates the cruise and blew it off with compressed air. Has worked fine ever since. 10 days later and the front switch still isn't in. Ridenow Powersports in Tucson isn't working out well for me.

'14 ES owner here with the blinking issue as well (40K miles). Haven't been able to narrow it down yet, but the issue does seem to be getting worse.

When it first happened I went right for the front brake light switch, cleaned it up, blew it out and lubricated the lever pivot. That seemed to help for a bit but it's back now with a vengence.

More to follow.

It strikes me that the lack of CC on the Africa Twin may not be such a big deal. Cruise was an important part of my decision to go with a S10. On what percent of bikes is this occurring?

Agreed and excellent write up. Hopefully this thread helps others and hopefully I never need it again ;).

I'm now at about 1000 miles with no issues...!

cruise control not engaging (blinking), code error 090, brake light with issue... solved replacing front brake switch (very expensive!)
So I've got the blinking light now. Im pretty sure its the front brake light switch since it will stay on after I release the brake lever. I took it apart yesterday and cleaned it up. I put it back together and pushed the button in and out, before remounting it, and the brake light would still stay on then go off when it felt like it.

I was going to unhook it and ride it for awhile just to make sure that's it, yes I no the brake light wont come on when I hit the front brake. Where does it wire into it? Anyone got any pics? Thanks.

I don’t think you can test the CC with the switch unplugged. I think you’ll have somehow bypass the switch.

The front brake switch plugs in inside the lower right side cowling. The connectors are inside a rubber tube that's kind of buried. If you dig a bit you should be able to see two green wires and two yellow wires going into the connector. It's hard to get the connectors demated because there's not much slack or room to work but if you peel the rubber back a bit and take your time it's possible.

Interesting - I swapped my rear wheel from the S10 (2014) that had the cruising warming light issue to my other S10 (2017) Punched out almost 1,300 k’s on it and had two (2) flashing episodes on my otherwise fault free S10.
NOW
the S10 (2014) with the original cruise warning light issues completed over 8,000 k’s and never had an issue at all with the other rear wheel from the 2017 bike. Go figure that?
