Your right guys on the dimmer its not plug an play i was referring to more of the ease on the squadron harness itself sorry if i was misleading by referring to that instead of more of the dimmer. But we have just released a special Adventure bike kit dimmer which is easier to install then older version, you guys should like alot more. It already has the connectors on it

Agree completely.

I did not want to make a big deal out of this when I said they were not really plug-n-play, but they are not.

This is a generic kit, not designed specifically for the ST, so...... you do need some basic electrical skills, schematic reading ability and be able to put connectors on wires. And this is probably what most people who buy Baja Designs stuff can do anyway. It is not rocket science, but does take some skill to do correctly.

Even if you don't know how to put this together, there are lots of people on the Forum that will give you a hand. Just do not expect to simply plug them in.

I am in contact with Baja support and he has told me repeatedly the HID should not be the issue. I tend to agree with you (and others) now that I think it through, the box needs a radio signal, it is managing the lights with PWM. The HID's are ferocious noisy.

I am going to double check the wiring, and inspect the box as you suggest, and try them before I start up and headlights off. Baja volunteered to send a box or fob, I asked him to Next Day both and I will rerun either failed components or the stuff he sent. We'll see.
UPDATE
Without going back through here and hitting all the helpful hints everyone provided, here's the deal. Baja Designs support claims the HID should not be an issue. Baja Designs stood tall and shipped me a new dimmer module, I jumper wired it in initially to test, and everything worked. Score 2 for Baja Designs, the HID did not matter and the new box solved my problem.

Rebuilt my harness, thanks again Steve, I included an on off switch like you did this time. Finished buttoning up all the plastic Friday night and took it out for a brief test. WOW. HID and Squadrons, maybe I should say I took it for a test flight.

Put a few hundred miles on Saturday, no night riding to speak of but lots of moving and shaking. All remains well.

I did get my dimmer box tucked in under the little triangular cover in front of the display. I had to nick a corner off the headlight surround trim, but it fit, clean easy install that way.

I did get one pic of the box loosely installed, I will post it later, and I should be able to get a pic of the trim corner clean up while it is assembled.

All I need now is a bit of night riding to play fighter pilot.

Baja Designs stands behind their stuff, spend away with confidence.

Nice work! That's really all that was 'lacking' if you could even call it that. This kit will be 'easy peasey' for anyone to install. ::008::

I still haven't gotten around to installing the Squadrons - life keeps getting in the way. This past weekend I lost both my headlights (hi and lo beam) while riding at night. Swapping out the fuse and checking bulbs didn't make any difference. Yesterday morning, just in case, I went through the same routine and voila!! the headlights worked fine. I did stack the deck in my favor... I was parked in front of a dealer, AND it was daylight! :D

In any case, this experience has made me re-think my installation of the Squadron lights. Has anyone installed these with the dimmer module and completely separate from the stock wiring? Essentially I am trying to end up with a total backup to the stock headlights.

Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions.

Chris

Will steve's way not work? he is only using the highbeam to switch the dimmer. Everything else is running off an individual circuit.

I am in the same boat. Still sitting in the box. in the garage. I call it my winter project box...AKA, my hide all my goodies from the missus box 8)

Steve's way might work, but I don't know enough about electrical stuff to be sure. I'm trying to end up with a set up that is completely independent of the rest of the lighting system, with the exception of needing power from the battery. Since I'm not sure what caused the headlight issue to begin with, completely isolating the Squadrons seems like a total backup solution.

Mike,

If I wanted to install the Squadrons and the dimmer module as a totally standalone system which of your switches should I use?

Thanks,

Chris

Yep, my way is independent of the OEM headlights. I am only reliant on having the bike running (to provide power to the aux foglight connector that I am using) and the high-beam switch (to go from the dimmer setting to full brightness). Does not matter if the stock headlights work or not. I turn them on independently via the PIAA switch.

:D Blind leading the blind? I'm up for it! My buddy Tom just bought his S10 last weekend and is an electrical guru - he wired up his lights without breaking a sweat - and has kindly offered to help. I ordered the PIAA switch mentioned earlier in the thread; as soon as that arrives, I'm ready to tackle this project. Deer season is coming....
