I understand he rode a T100SC. I had one myself back in 1967, a great bike at 500cc and only 335 lbs dry weight. I thought it was heavy back then, but now I've got the Super Tenere and the T100SC seems a flyweight by comparison. I was in the Navy in Hawaii at the time and would meet up with several guys and go trail riding every week or so up in the Koolau Mountain Range on Oahu.
