IL, the land of straight, flat, boring roads
I just got the January 2011 issue of Motorcycle Consumer News (the USA's MCN) and I really enjoyed their review after they rode the S10 in Arizona, both on and off road. Here is a caption under a pic of the front wheel that I especially enjoyed: "Big 310mm floating discs come with full time ABS to slow tubeless spoked wheels. The ABS works really well in the dirt, justifying the decision." The article expands on this, including ""Yamaha has managed to make its ABS shockingly effective even on slippery surfaces"

Excellent! Finally some journos with some sense, who actually tested the ABS offroad, instead of assuming it wouldn't work, because the BMW's doesn't.

I should refer this article to the AMA's Ed Moreland, who says in their January issue "there are situations when anti lock brakes could increase the risk of a crash, such as when riding an on-highway or dual-sport motorcycle on a dirt or gravel road." Ed needs to ride the S10 off road.

It's a good article. Except for actually using the ABS offroad and identifiying it works well, I didn't think there was any other surprises...except for the following comment:
"In fact, we had to wonder if the Tenere's rear suspension performance off-road isn't superior even to the KTM 990 Adventure's, it was that impressive".
Sounds promising!

By the way, they were giving away the last two issues free at the motorcycle show and also giving '2year for the price of one' subscriptions and renewals. I tacked another 2 years onto my subscription for $44 which is about what I normally pay when they send renewal requests. Figured I'd save them the renewal mailings. I'm down to getting two motorcycle magazines anymore and if I ever get down to one, MCN will still be hitting my mailbox. I like that they don't have paying advertisers to keep happy so they can say what they really think about a bike. I don't always agree with their opinions, but at least they are speaking their mind and saying it as they see it. They don't have the Jan issue (with the Super Ten on the cover) on their website yet. It's still showing the December issue. http://www.mcnews.com/mcn/

Yes, December cover was of the Bagger bike shoot-out. Not exactly my cut of tea. Even so, it was still an interesting read. I forgive them, though, since they put the Super Tenere on the January cover. Ha.
