Most durable skidplate?

Yes Stephan, that was my first choice for a skid plate. At the time I was price driven. AltRider gave me a really good package deal on crash bars and skid plate so that's what I went with. I don't do much off road so it's not too bad.

I hav considered mounting a piece of high density plastic to the bottom of mine. Kind of a glide/wear item. Especially now ACD is not making them any more.
What you want to use is UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight) Polyethylene. McMaster Carr (www.mcmaster.com) carries it in a multitude of thicknesses, sizes, and varieties.

My ACD skid plate has served it's purpose. I took it off last weekend for an oil change and I'm going to pass on doing any hammering on it this time. I sent ACD a message and haven't heard back. Therefore, I'm down to either Tabasco's or a T-Rex. I'm more about function than fashion, my ACD was just the plain aluminum. How much is a plain, no frills Tabasco skid plate going to run???

One of the things I liked about the ACD was the rear mounting bracket (I think stainless steel) helps reinforce the bottom of the plate where a lot of rock bashing happens.

On another note, if I do get a new skid plate, I'll make someone a deal on my ACD if they want to "tweak" it some.

Im on here and you can contact me 24/7........... Ours are CUSTOM, if you want stainless, we can do stainless.... I can even add a stainless bottom plate to the aluminum skid plate....

By the way, we still have a warranty ! You break it, we fix it !

I recently had a Colorado customer in the shop... He has one of our skid plates that was still intact and NOT touching the motor, but it was beaten on hard. This guy has obviously hit some serious stuff since owning the skid plate.... When he came to pick up the bike I said, WOW your skid plate has really worked for you. He said, IT SURE HAS ! I said, I don't know that I have ever seen one of our skid plates that has ever been hit that hard in so many places, do you know when that happened ?? He said, he thought most of that was from going down Black Bear Pass a bunch of times....

For folks that dont know, Black bear pass is gnarly and probably not a "good" idea on something like a Tenere. Look it up on You-Tube. It was banged up but still looked to be fully functional...

CRAZY !

I like your sales pitch! I think I seen where your plate is 1/4” aluminum, probably doesn’t need any reinforcement. Like I said, I just want a “no frills” skid plate. I figured you had a basic pattern or design you use and wanted to know how much. If you don’t want to post here, please send me a PM. I need to make a decision soon. Thanks

Hey Tabasco, I really like what your saying about your skid/bash plate.
'Son of Jamesgang' and I were discussing today how we need to get some protection since we've began exploring further afield.
Would you consider shipping two, "plain Jane" aluminum bash plates to Canada?
Regards,

Warranty, "If" you have an issue with it because you have jumped your bike off the Grand Canyon and you damage it, contact me and I will get you fixed back up.

Price, custom made for each customer. Not a 'set price'. Different options available.

Its typically used with Altrider crash bars, but we have never have anyone not be able to use the crash bars they own. So at this time, it fits all crash bars that I know of. If someone is ordering, we go over all these details and have a few conversations. This is not a mass produced product like 99.9999 % of the world.

This guy contacted me a few years ago to let me know he was on the mend. He was doing 80 across the desert and ran off the road. Cartwheeled his bike a bunch of times, he got carried off. The tow truck driver took this picture. He sent this picture and then called me to say,- The bike is trashed, but everything around the engine is fine and your skid plate "Vault" protected everything........ Bike was toast, but he was very impressed with the skid plate, he called to tell me this story..........

I don't know... I only find out the actual shipping cost when I walk up to the counter at the post office. Its approximately $100 US for the least expensive ground service.

That’s too bad that ACD has stopped manufacturing their skid plate. I like it because it covers the cat. The cat is made of pretty thick material though.

They are still making the ACD skip plate , it's the 120 euros shipping to the US that hurts. My panniers shipped for 1/2 of that. The US company appears defunct.

So I'm guessing that leaves 2 choices for a full frame mount guard. Tabasco or Trex. I'm not sure I like the Trex mounts that rise to side mounts. Anyone got an opinion?

I can vouch for the ACD skid plate as it definitely saved my case from total destruction.A few months ago I was on Texas 652 a road under construction at around midnight and I somehow hit a very large rock. It dented both sides of the front rim (still holds proper air pressure) and it launched my bike into the air, somehow I held on and didn't crash. Inspected everything and continued. Weeks later when I took off the plate to change the oil I saw why I was launched as I actually ran over the rock! There is a foam pad inside the skid plate which now has my bottom case imprinted into it. It dented the plate and shows gouge marks all the way down the plate. Without such a thick plate it would have destroyed my case with me in the middle of nowhere! Shows that you don't have to be off-road to get the benefits of a good skid plate. My .02 cents is to have the beefiest plate you can afford on your bike but anything is better than nothing.
