Steve, again, great photos of an awesome ride and a nice report. I am off to Utah this weekend, by car, for some hiking with my better half and some friends. We will be in Moab for a few days before heading to Bryce and Zion. And I know all about snow. My 2018 Super Tenere is sitting in the garage with zero miles on it, ready to go. I just need it to stop snowing and the temperature to get up high enough to melt the snowdrifts. BTW, the DRZ was fun in Death Valley in March but I sure missed the Tenere on the highway bits. Cheers, David

eemsreno , if you read this 'cause this thread you started is a couple of years going , I have a few questions. first about the bikes , it seems ya'll have plated 2 strokes , would like to know about that .... and as a older guy without a lot of dirt experience , is it crazy to go to moab ? my buddies and myself are planning a October trip a year from now , I am considering a 2 stroke if it could be plated , 4 stroke if not.... any ideas would be great...

Even without a lot of dirt bike experience Moab is great!
There are trails of all skill levels and the scenery is outstanding.
Moab lets side x sides on their streets and dirt bikes with plates.
All states are different about what can be plated.
The reason we have plates on them is so we can go through Moab to access more trails.
If you are staying off highways and out of Moab you wouldn't need a plate.
You do have to get a trail permit to ride any trail out there. A friend of mine got a ticket for not having one.
Two strokes are so much lighter than a legal plated 4stroke that they are much more enjoyable to ride all day.
One of the BIG must do trails to ride is The White Rim Trail, You don't need much off road experience to ride it.
They have great maps that show all the trails and it is a must to ride with them. There are so many trails it is easy to get all messed up.

thanks eemsreno for the quick reply , I'm interested in a 2 stroke for the reasons you state and getting a plate on it would really be cool. they ( people around here ) say that plating a 2 stroke in texas not that hard.... we will see , ktm's 300 xc-w tpi has my attention if I can get it plated . the local ktm dealer has said he can get any of the dirt bikes he sells legal , but we never talked about 2 strokes . I'm not a total dirt dweeb if I ride at my pace , seems most of the trails are 1st or 2nd gear stuff.... just need to get a bike so I can practice some basic dirt skill things... our trip is for the fall of 2019 so I have about 13 months to get ready... wife said I can go , I heard " you can buy a new bike honey"...

Awesome, that's some place I hope to visit one day, apparently they have some SxS rental tours around there, a little pricey but convenient when you are from far away.

one more question , can the tenere do the white rim trail ( safely ) ...... videos show a couple of places that might be a challenge to that .... but if doable I might try it.

again thanks, this Moab thing is starting to jell , that the big bike can do that trail opens up a spring trip and then do the dual sport in the fall trip. that is the plan that is jelling in my head.... ill finally need to put a skid plate on my bike if this happens....

Thanks for asking.
I won both motos in the + 60 but they gate dropped us with the + 50 guys and 2 of them beat me. There was 11 of us altogether.
4 of us in the + 60.
I am also on a 125 and almost all the other riders were on 450s except one guy on a 250sx 2stroke.
I sure am not implying that a 125 is an disadvantage but a Advantage! My bike is faster than theirs.
