Definitely a short coming in design. Some of us have added zerk fittings. I had the zerk on my 2012 and need to add it to my 2015. NorCal Riders need a Tech Day.

I have no problem with stating it as a required maintenance item. And I have no problem performing that simple task. But I think that in itself is a work-a-round for a design or material shortcoming. I have never had a bike before that would require lubing the shift arm pivot before a year has passed to keep shifting normally. As a matter of fact, in 45 years of bike riding, I'd say I've performed that task 8 times. 6 of them on my Tenere.

Understand and not going to argue ago it either way, other than to say it's been pretty standard in how Honda and Yamaha have designed motorcycles for a very long time. The following will look familiar, even though it's for a Honda Rebel, and the design for those (as well as the VMax) goes back 30 years:

...Given a sudden snowstorm (Colorado weather, go figure) I'll have to test this if there is a break between now and the El Nino winter that's supposed to come, otherwise it won't be until next spring.
Had a strange burst of warm weather now in February and took the bike out for that test spin finally. I did not experience any missed gears up or down for the 3 hours I rode, so looks like that would be the problem. Thanks to those with helpful ideas / comments, much appreciated.

The shift shaft spring could be broken. There were some issues with broken springs with the early S10's. I even bought a spring and put it under the seat as a JIC. The spring on the 14 & 15 models has a new part number and Yamaha has superseded the part number on the 12 & 13 to the new number.
yep that was my problem

Having the same problem.. bike is just 1 month out of warranty and the shift pedal not coming up again on its own.. shift spring is broken. It's located at the right side of the engine right behind the clutch assembly.. see pictures ( hope I succeed in uploading pictures)

and then what happened?
What year is your bike? A bad batch of springs makes sense. I've worked the hell out cable, and hydro clutches. . . . and never broke a spring. More than a few cables, but no springs.
