Re: Is my tire on backwards?

Just a quick update... I Got brand new Michelin Anakee 3's on my bike earlier this week and WOW.... Seriously, I can't believe how much better the bike runs. The first thing I noticed is that is seems to sit up taller.. There must of been so much rubber off the old tires that I was raised up a few cm's! And everything seems so incredibly smooth, its like riding a brand new bike. I know it was a little costly but it was totally worth it.

For the new folks, when browsing threads, double check the date of the last post before adding your 2 cents. This one was only 7 months old. :D Nothing compared to the several year old threads that sometimes get resurrected.

The way I see it nothing wrong with adding to an older thread, in fact sometimes it can be very helpful , but that’s just my opinion

That potential exists. But often another agreement of what's already been said is what gets posted. That doesn't add much to the thread. Many search on 'Show unread posts since last visit' to see what's new and posting a 'me too' to a thread that's already concluded doesn't create new content that could be helpful.

It's just a reminder, not a chastisement. Everyone has done it, sometimes it's better to bring back an old thread than start a new one. But being aware of how old the thread is and if it's still on-going or pretty much done with is a good thing.

I have been really interested in them. I would like to hear how you feel about them after a couple of months. From what I have read so far riders either love them or hate them. The biggest complaint seems to be road noise off of the front tire around 60 mph. That may be related to a certain road surface though as not everyone hears it. Some say it is deafening. Most of the roads I ride on are chipseal and I suspect it may be the real smooth asphalt or concrete that they don't like. I will fire you off a PM and if you don't mind and remember please fire me off a PM down the road.

While you wait, I will chime in. I ran 2 sets on a Vstrom 1000 and 3 sets on a 2013 ST. I am on my second set on my 2015 ST. I have had great luck with them and like them well. I use mine for sport touring with some dry dirt and gravel occasionally tossed in.

They turn well
They stop well
Good wet traction
Fair off-road traction
Balance with minimal weight needed
Maintain a nice round profile with wear, minimal falt-spotting on the rear tires crown

I ride with ear plugs, but have left my plugs at home a few times. I do not hear any noise coming from them. I think they are a great all around tire. My wear experience is shown below with stock Bridgestone tires as a baseline.

Bridgestone OEM - 7,000 miles front and rear (2 sets, 2 STs)
Anakee 3 - 9,000 miles rear, 6,000 miles front. I run 3 fronts for every pair of rears.

I think the number of them I have ran speaks to my satisfaction.

Probably other threads on the anakee 3, and it's been hashed over pretty well. I put a set on my 2012 and I took off down the road, and before I had 1/4 mile on them I heard the noise they make and thought I botched the install somehow so it kind of worried me, but the noise is not all that bad, just something I wasn't expecting. The tires lasted and worked real good. I had 13,000 miles on the set when I replaced them. They are not a real attractive tire, but work good for the most part. I don't have any plans to ever use them again. So far the stock Bridgestone Battlewings on the 2017 are wearing very well.

Yes, its true.. the tires do make a noise when your riding completely straight, you will get that "Hummmm" sound but its no where near annoying or unpleasant, it has never bothered me. In fact, unless someone mentioned anything I probably would of not noticed or cared. To be fair, I do ride with a Sena headset and often listen to music while I ride so the tire noise has absolutely no effect on my enjoy-ability for the ride.

Re: Re: Is my tire on backwards?

Had the Anakee 3s and am in the hate group. RicoChet, the noise gets worse as they wear, especially in turns. When leaned ALL the way over, it is one of the few tires I've had which I could ride off of the shoulder of the rear tire so it would slide out. Dallara first reported this and a couple of others found it but most don't lean that far on the Super Tenere.

For anything off of pavement, the grip starts mediocre at best and the grooves get narrower with wear, so traction goes to non-existent.

They were good as far as lasting for 17,000 miles in commuting and on wet pavement.

I and many others have moved to the Mitas E07.

+1

I also use them and they will sing to you going down the road, but I also wear earplugs, so it never bothers me.

I have used a set. I wear ear plugs and cannot hear or never noticed any tread noise. I could corner hard enough to drag either peg and never felt any loss of traction on or off the gas. The rear is better than the front which wore out first, taking a funny shape. Also, the tread pattern on the front didn’t give me very much confidence riding a steeply crowned gravel road. It felt as though there wasn’t much side grip and that the front might wash out. It never did, but I didn’t care for the feel. With a better front to go with the rear, I’d give them another try.

I was definitely in the one set and done camp. Always was very happy with the Anakee 2. The Anakee 3 only inspired me to keep looking for my next tire. That search stopped when I found the Mitas E07. I guess I should be grateful for my A3 experience, it led to the best tire I've ever used.

Compared to K60s or Mitas E07, the Anakee 3s don't sing that much. :D I loved the rear for durability, but hated the front for it's funky tri-band wear and poor handling after about 8k miles. Still work it out, just stubborn, I guess. ???

Appart from the noise, it's the only tyre that has put me into a weave, twice. Once at low speed, two up and luggage, I thought I had got a puncture, the second at high speed, solo and luggage. The second was the scariest, doing about 60mph, I managed to get it stopped up against the central barrier on a Belgian highway, luckily it was early morning and little traffic. On both occasions I checked the pressures post incident, but they where spot on.

Forgot about the funky wear and the front going before the rear. The A3s on my bike howled much louder than the whine of the E07s. Th eE07s are usually don't notice.

I definetly would not buy another front tire. I took an approximately 8,800 mile trip this summer and while I was impressed with the lack of rear tire wear I was shocked by how fast the front tire wore out. I stopped at a dealer in Ontario to replace the front tire with almost 7,000 miles; down into the wear barsIMG_0667.JPG. Meanwhile the rear is over 9,000 miles and probably has another couple thousand miles on it. Otherwise nice handling tires with good rain performance but too much of a mismatch in wear properties.
