The Caucasus is a geographic region, predominantly a mountainous country in Eurasia, located south of the East European Plain, on the border of Europe and Asia, which covers the territories: Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia, a number of unrecognized and partially recognized states.

The Caucasus Mountains are only 1800 km from Moscow, but my eyes have always fallen on other countries or other places.
And in 2019. for the May holidays, which is 10 days, my wife and I decided to visit this region of our vast Motherland. As always, we left early in the morning on May 1 and started towards the hero-city Volgograd, which was 1000 km away.

The trip was mixed. After all, there was always a war in the Caucasus and it was always not calm. But what could have stopped us ?!))
In one day, we failed to get to Volgograd. The second passenger was having a hard time. We spent the night in front of Volgograd, not reaching 150 km.

Volgograd is certainly impressive, where blood was shed at every corner, in every house, on every square meter. The entire city is strewn with memorials and monuments to the fallen soldiers.
Pay attention to the eyes of the sculpture Motherland Calls !!! There is a lot of pain in them.

After walking for a couple of hours around the city, we moved towards the city of Astrakhan. The more we moved to the South, the hotter it got and the temperature rose to +30 degrees. It's May 2, and already +30 I thought, wiping sweat from my face

After Astrakhan we spent the night on the Volga River, which flows into the Caspian Sea.

In general, the Volgograd and Astrakhan regions will fry you in the sun in the summer. The temperature in the shade reaches +40 - 50 degrees. And in addition to this, mosquitoes during the day, and mosquitoes in the evening

In the morning we were awakened by the barking of dogs. It turned out that we stood next to some military unit. And a soldier with a machine gun made us understand that it was time for us to get out. Ahead of us was Kolmykia, lifeless Kolmykia. Steppe and desert, where there is nowhere to hide from the scorching sun. Where the road is covered with sand.

Наш путь лежал в сторону Дагестана и его столицы Махачкалы. Репутация Дагестана в 90-е и 2000-е годы внушала страх всем, кто слышал слово Дагестан. Сейчас, конечно, все в прошлом, но осадок остался и время от времени предыдущий перестрелки. Об этом свидетельствуют военные блок-посты.
Ближе к вечеру мы приехали в Махачкалу, но ночевать в городе не захотели. Мы решили повернуть к берегу Каспийского моря и найти там домик.

Our path lay in the direction of Dagestan and its capital Makhachkala. Dagestan's reputation in the 90s and 2000s instilled fear in everyone who heard the word Dagestan. Now, of course, everything is a thing of the past, but the sediment remained and from time to time, there are shootings. As evidenced by the military checkpoints.
Later in the evening we got to Makhachkala, but they did not want to spend the night in the city. We decided to turn to the shore of the Caspian Sea and find a house there.

К сожалению, дома и отели все еще были закрыты. И нам пришлось ехать в город. Переночевав, утром двинулись в сторону границы с Азербайджаном в город Дербент.
Современный город был основан в 438 году нашей эры. е. как персидская крепость, состоящая из расположенной на холме цитадели (Нарын-Кала) и двух идущих от нее к морю каменных стен, которые перекрывали узкий (3 км) проход между морем и Кавказскими горами и оградили территорию город с севера и юга

Those pictures of monuments and wide open spaces reminds me of summer 1994. I spent a bit of time near Kursk, staying at a research station located at a former army base. Wonderful people. I learned to really like eating food with a lot of dill. We studied the biogeography, farm economy and changes taking place in land use at the village level, collective farms, and distribution of some collective farms for urban kitchen gardens. Got a full tour of the local nuclear plant (stood on top of the reactor vessel!).

I remember staying at the Red Army Hotel in Moscow and thinking someone was trying to sell me heroin in an elevator. Then I learned that they were just asking if I wanted them to press the button for the first floor. My ear for Russian was not very good.

Ahh, great memories. Thank you for bringing them back. Looks like a great trip. You are covering some serious distance.

Before the mountains we stopped at a gas station and I was surprised that they were selling strawberries at the gas station. It was unusual to eat strawberries in early May. Having turned into the mountains from the sea coast, it became very cold. We arrived at a small village, where there is one hotel and one home cafe. We spent the night there.
