so instead of starting a new thread to talk about and display photos of my upcoming Colorado trip , I will just post them here .
I have not had my kayak out yet this year as have been riding the beta on weekends , the heat has just about put a stop on the dirt bike stuff , so its kayak season.

so here is a thought for the guys who follow this thread . what do you do when it gets hot ? do you still ride dirt or do you take a break ? do you switch activities like swimming boating etc.
of course as this nation is so large and the seasons are so different in different places we all have different plans . in central Texas we can ride almost 12 months a year (some blazing hot summer days or freezing cold winter days and or the occasional monsoon is the exception ). I should be home from my trip on July 23 ,leaves 4 days before I return to work to do something else fun.....I know a set of rapids I can lay in and as the water flows over me just feel the stress leaving the body. might do that.

Chris you need a pop up awning to carry in your truck .
You took the words right out of my mouth!! I was just thinking about getting an Easy Up this last camping trip. I used to have an REI one but boy was it a pain to deploy!

I ride if it's hot. We're heading to Moab to do 4 days there, and then going to spend a week in New Mexico (Santa Fe). we'll do 80% dirt bikes, 20% street bikes.

Offroad, I carry a camelback with 100 oz bladder.

I rode off-road 4 days in MT last summer when it was 102F. it took us 3 hours to go 7 miles on one of those days - really gnarly.

Memorial day was 95 degrees. We left at 10:00 AM, rode 40 miles of really hard trail, and were back at the truck at 6:00 PM. we ate on the trail. I was good for about 5 hours, and the last three hours were brutal. i started by falling 5x on the first slab of granite. oops. Brutal, but really fun. i was almost 4x older than the youngest rider, and about 7% as skilled as he was. I drank about 80 oz that day.

Fun, but brutal. took me 3 days to recover.

So, yeah, ride when it's hot. i was racing road bicycles in iowa in the late 80's (drought years). That was brutal, too, but if you stay hydrated and keep electrolytes balanced, it can be OK. (One day it was 101 degrees F in my apt. at 8:00 PM. i had a choice - see the rambo movie in the air conditioned theater, or tough it out in my apt. i toughed it out.)

Last Alaska trip it was 104 degrees all the way across Montana, hot but I handled it fine, thankfully I didn’t have my new Klim Latitude jacket back then I probably would have suffered terribly from the heat, it’s the most expensive jacket I’ve ever owned but it’s pretty lousy for warm or cold weather and if it rains the water runs down the back of my neck. Highly doubt I will ever buy anything with the Klim name on it again.

Personally, in the heat, a back pack type hydration system is the best. I ended up using the CamelBak carrier, with a Geigerrig bladder/bite valve. Pack it full of ice, add water, and Propel flavor tube w/electrolytes. I used the two liter size. Compact enough to stay out of the way, and enough capacity to be effective. Two liters for the first part of the day, and two liters for the last half of the day. I used one flavor/electrolyte tube per liter. I never got a cramp, or ended up with kidney stones. Every one of the guys I rode with, sooner or later, developed kidney stones. I'd tell them they needed fluids, but they said they were good. Literally a can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink story.

Even when I was young I didn't like hot weather. I would ride and ride hard all year long in the dirt and it really didn't bother me. Now that I have (ahem) some age on me and not in very good shape I really suffer on my dirt bike in the heat. Now with that being said here in Kentucky I generally ride in heavy wooded hills. When I can get into a flow and ride trails especially in the bottoms where the ferns and magnolias grow I feel really good even in heat. The humidity is really what bothers me. If I get into some of the really tough goat trails that require work I over heat fast! It just sucks it out of me now. So over the last couple of years I have been doing canoe trips. I have found I really enjoy that.

I got mild heatstroke once when doing some heavy backpacking. I walked onto an exposed ridge in direct sunlight when I realised I had stopped sweating (sign 1). I retraced my path back to some pines. I forced myself to drink, even though the "taste" was disagreeable (sign 2). I sat until the vibrant trippy green colours (sign 3?) went back to normal, then carried on.

After that experience, I bought a bum bag that held two liter bottles and worn in front. It was my own lazinesss that brought the heatstroke on. The water was in my pack and I couldn't be arsed to take the backpack off and get the water out. The bumbag at the front sorted that perfectly, although camelbacks are probably the best option.

Here in the Phils - on the bike, I stop, go into 7/11 and mix ice and water into a plastic bag, then soak my T, balaclava, trousers/pants (on the hottest days) and neckband and continue. Of course ppl look on as if I have lost my mind but I survive... lol

I have ridden in the heat a bunch of times. A few seasons ago I got a Fly cooling vest. The thing actually works. Soak it with water and wear it under your riding gear. It lasts a good hour or two with the vents open before needing to be re-soaked.

my aerostitch Darion works pretty well in the heat , it protects me from the blast ,and as the air draws through (long sleeve cotton shirts work best ) the jacket it acts on my perspiration to keep me amazingly (tolerable for sure ) cool.....
its a very early Saturday morning ,woke at 1am and I am wide awake .
my dogs are confused . had a thought pop into my head and it want go away..... hate that when it does that.
no dirt bike this morning , have 3 days to finish preparation for Tuesday morning launch of the trip to Colorado . no trailer queens here ,we ride every mile . and damn its turned into summer (Denver has a forecast of mid 90s ) and it will be shall we say warm on this ride .
have to friends riding with me ,ken AKA superman (met him at a local gas station 6 or 7 years ago) has become a stellar friend and riding buddy and lives a few miles from me .and the other guy is Matt AKA Sgt. Rock . he is an active duty E 7 (thank you for your service Matt) and he is younger in his 30s I think . 2 grandpas and a young family man . I met Matt at our local Yamaha dealer almost 2 years ago and our friend ship is growing . all good stuff .
