. . . . read an article that said part of Texas rolling black out problem is that the wind generators were frozen (that's the answer for the future along with solar ) and the ones that were working were working at twice the design speed ( prone to failure) as for solar till yesterday there has been no sunshine for over a week . . . .
Just watched the news. It advised that there are what they call "peaker" plants. They cost more to operate, and aren't as efficient, but are used for exactly this situation. For "whatever reason(s)" these plants aren't being utilized. Sorry, but, this has the stink of politics to me. Don't care which color.

"Texas" has bragged about their power grid being separate from the rest of the country, and how they have plenty of power. Might be true, if they use the entire grid. The city of Abilene didn't consider their water plants as critical. They shut the power off to the plants. . . . no water for an entire city.. WTF.

And Oklahoma!! This is crazy. Even Oklahoma City is having record breaking freezing temps. So much for these freaks that believe in the "Global Warming" theory.
No, this is an exact result of global warming. Melting ice makes a high pressure zone of Alaska/Artic Circle. High pressure circulates in a clockwise pattern. . . . which blows the cold air right down into the US. . . . specifically OK & TX.

We will disagree on global warming. I’ve lived here all my life it’s been cold with snow before the last time it was this cold here was in the late 1800s according to the weather babes . There is a political push global warming in which there is no real proof then it’s climate change. Tomorrow it will be something else . Replace coal with wind this is what you get. Turbines froze solid. And they kill animals. That’s the answer . Sometimes the wind does not blow. Except in Austin, no wind turbines here .

Don't get me wrong, I don't believe in the global warming for the reasons that "they" are puting out. It's real, because that's how the planet cycles. It gets warm. . . . and it gets cold. . . . and back again. The planet has had several ice ages. . . . that had nothing to do with man.

Yes that's my point. You have a group of 1st grade education scientists saying it's all man made.
NOBODY has ever said that. The unknown is how much man contributes and what threshold % of man's contribution requires targeted intervention.

Bottom line we need clean air and clean water to live healthy. Pollution sucks and destroys the planet so why not do what we can now for future generations? Like everything else in life just need reasonable compromise, balance and gradual actions. It's never gonna be an all or nothing approach.

There is article after article making phony claims of climate change being man made. Ridiculous.

Pollution does suck. But, from what I've read, greenhouse gasses are the biggest factor of global warming. Know what the biggest greenhouse gas is? Methane. Know where methane comes from? Yup. . . . do-do. And, every living thing on this planet makes do-do. Dinosaurs made an enormous amount of greenhouse gasses. And, from what I have read, it was pretty damn warm then. . . . until the asteroid showed up. Should we do what we can to eliminate pollution, and greenhouse gasses? Of course. . . . within reason. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Woke to freezing rain this morning , and it’s a warm 32 degrees . But snow is forecast for tonight again. Weather starts to improve tomorrow. But the ground is going to be very wet and muddy to do much riding off road. May take the tenere on a run Saturday.

Another snow storm this morning. But the sun is now out and the rolling blackouts seem to be over . Sometimes tomorrow it will be above freezing, let the melting begin.

We're up to 32, and sunshine. Snow is melting well. Finally got water back on last night at 9:30p, and the last power outage was at 11:30p.

The rolling outages weren't the biggest issues. The lack of high quality h-2-0 was the pain. We have a propane fireplace that heats most of the house, but didn't use it. Kept that in reserve in case the power went totally out.

I put a wood stove in when I built. Just for the backup heat source. It will heat my house in case of a power outage. View attachment 77475
I once lived in a house as a kid that did not have central heat, and winters would easily get down into the 30s. We had one of these freestanding models at one end of the house, and an insert in the original fireplace in the other. Our first night in the house was just before Christmas, and since one of the rooms wasn't finished, I was chosen to sleep on the couch in the room with the freestanding stove. So my step-father stoked that stove up to the point where it seemed to be glowing red. I was 12 at the time, and it was so hot in there that I climbed into my baby brother's playpen that was behind the couch to escape the waves of heat coming off of the stove...

I may do a wood burner stove as a summer project . wife is more open to it now . might do a propane heater just for emergencies like we just had , propane might be easier and cheaper long term .

I love our propane fireplace. Instant on. . . . instant heat. When you're done, instant off, and no worries about embers. We had to get a complete one. They make log sets to retro into an existing fireplace. A 20lb bottle costs $10US right now. The most I've ever paid is $15US. Oddly enough the price of propane is connected with the price of crude oil. Although it's a by-product of natural gas. The 20lb bottle will last 2-3 days with intermittent use throughout the day with 30F days. It'll raise the temp from 60-70 in about an hour and a half.

In the summer I disconnect the bottle from the fireplace, and use it on the grill. I've thought about getting bigger bottles, but they get heavy pretty quick. The 20 pounders are easy to move/handle, even for the wife.fireplace.JPG

Good to know . Wood fire is nice, but lots of work. The more I think about it the more propane looks like a good answer.
