I was in the media gallery today and it's getting to be a total mess. It needs organization.

If anybody out there is extremely anal about organization and would like to help organize things (and keep them organized), I'll bestow upon you the title of "Gallery Moderator" and all the fame and unpaid hours of work that come with it. :D

Seriously, if anybody wants to donate their time to help out send me a private message.

Thanks,
Venture

I think most Tenere owners are un-organized. All they think about is riding the thing. I would talk more but I gotta go ride. ::025::

I'm sorry , but I had to post that. You know me.........? :p

I would offer to help if I could get this confuser stuff down. ???

I hear ya. It's on my to-do list to make a few demonstration "how-to" videos that show the folks here exactly how to use some of the more complex parts of the site.

I am kinda anal about my personal computer with this type of organization. The first thing that strikes me as critical when I look at the gallery is what criteria do we want to have for categorizing the media? I would initially start by defining categories like "modifications" or "journeys" and then break that down into finer criteria. I guess those things need to be defined first before anyone moves forward.

The general categories so far have been "Super Tenere," No real organization beyond that, although I did recently add a "Pannier Shots" category to try and separate out pannier pictures. More recently I created 3 sub-categories under that for Jesse Luggage, Trax, and Micatech (I think). So you can see how we can do sub-organizations.

I'm all ears on how we should do this, so anybody can chime in with input.

I would be willing to do it, but I would rather have input as to categories. Think big picture and we can refine later with sub categories as they arise.

My $0.02... as a 20+ year professional photographer with a personal archive consisting of over 150k images spanning 35mm slides all the way up to the latest RAW Digital captures - all archived seamlessly in a fully searchable database - I think it would be wise to spend some time looking at some of the online solutions that are already out there - things like Smugmug, Picasa, and others of the same ilk. There's no reason to reinvent the wheel.

Additionally, while it may be burdensome for those less computer savvy - I feel that it is imperative that all images be uploaded with as much metadata embedded in the images as possible - mainly good captions and as many relevant keywords as can be added. Otherwise you end up with a mess of an archive with no meaningful way to search them for something that might help. This will require either a VERY dedicated moderator or the willingness of the posters to take a few extra minutes to make sure that their posted images do the most possible good by making them easily categorized and searched.

I am more than willing to help give my insights to whomever might want to run with the idea. Under different circumstances I would entertain the idea of becoming the moderator myself, but with my imminent return to grad school I am loathe to take on a responsibility that I am almost certain that I cannot in good faith give the effort it deserves.
