700miles so far (i know, shamefully quoting the miles!)
First service done. Bike is ship shape to sail out today.

First long slab ride all the way from Atlanta to FLatisan - Tampa area.

Any tips on various bits - Mode, Setting, speeds (for best engine and fuel management) - would be welcome.

Take the long way. Spend more time creating a route along the back roads then just getting on the highway. The coastal section of Georgia (Savannah) is a nice ride, so is heading down towards Eufaula along the west side of Georgia. Then down to Apalachicola and along the emerald coast to the East on 98. Alternatively if you want to do it the right way.... Trans Eastern Trail - South. The GPS tracks are available via ADVRider. I love the backroads in the south east, but I hate the highways.

If time is a factor and you have to take the highway. I usually run the cruise control around 75-80 mph in Sport mode and bring a good play list. If it's hot keep the windshield low so you get plenty of air in your helmet vents. Stay out of the truckers turbulence. Suspension settings depend on how much weight you're carrying.

The long way (back) will probably be the scenic route. Not sure yet. There may be something that may need me to rush back. SE Trail is on the Bucket list - but for another 'standlone' trip.
Thanks for the tips. It will be slab (boring) all the way. Heading out this afternoon and would like to get there not too late in the night.

Which lane is the 'better' one to stick to? On my SS1000 I tended to stay middle or right lane (if traffic was very light).

For a two lane highway which accounts for most of the highways in the south except 95, I stay in the right lane unless passing. I try to maintain the average speed (~75-80MPH) so that I'm generally in between "herds" of cars and only passing stragglers going at or below the speed limit.

The worst part of that ride is 75, it sucks. Just take breaks before you need them and enjoy the ride.

I know. One of the boring slab rides. I've done the Chicago-Orlando and Atlanta-Orlando pilgrimage a number of times in a car. Chaos in the car, but the drive boring.
Will be digging into Easy Rock playlists and talking to myself probably!

Doing a 500+ mile slab day for me means a good playlist, a base layer on my lower bits with no seams to make hot spots (like Cycle Gear "heat out" spandex), suspension in soft, and beyond that just stretch the limbs and drink fluids along the way.

I second the advice looking at the route though. I'd rather do a 600+ mile curvy day than a 500 mile slab day. But you're there already so hope the ride was good and you can take a fun way home.

Delayed start, Atlanta traffic, two tailbacks due to some accident clean up, and a couple of stops had me ride into the night to complete the 445 Miles Ride in just under 8 hrs at 10:45pm with a 1up light luggage 46.2mpg average.
Even though slab, a decent ride, barring a couple cagers mixing drive time with sleep time. ??? ::)
