I went to my local dealer to get 4 tiny orings for my zrx1200 carbs. The guy tried to sell me a kit for $220. I went to napa and they gave me 4 free.

The motorcycle dealers take their cues from the auto dealers. If you look at the financial reports of publicly traded dealer chains like Penske where they break out profit by business segment, "parts and service" is usually the most profitable part of the business with 30% to 40% profit margins while new and used car sales are less than 10%.

What I don't get with some of the dealers I have tried to patronize, is why they charge shipping fee's. I have been at a Yamaha dealer looking for a Yamaha part, which they may not have in stock. I am good with them charging a little extra for the part, but charge me to have the OEM part shipped to the dealer? I can get the part cheaper, and most of the times, no shipping charge, online. I like to support the local dealer, but not at that rate.

Love Partzilla.com! If your order is over $100USD (I believe) then shipping is free. Usually gets me to order more stuff or back up parts for the free shipping. They ship quickly and usually have the best prices. My dealerships charge much more and 1 dealership that is known on this site charges more monies if you show up at the dealership, than if you order online from them. And you don't know if you have to wait for the part....or if they have it in stock.... Now-a-days many of the parts fit multiple bikes and with quantity discounts; I don't get why dealerships don't have a warehouse of parts! Also, don't get the business model of order the part from one person....then wait in another line for the cashier...then wait longer to actually get the part. If I'm at the dealership...then I'm desperate....and in a time crunch....
