So is. I do not count a fall on the road, because there will be a break, but the hard pannier can save a leg. But in off road complicated (with rocks and helping with the legs) ... a fall with hard panniers, sure is a break of the pannier. With soft paniers, you can even save the bike from some damage. I would not, hard off road, with the S10, I prefer my wr 450. It's like having sex with someone of 280 kg, and me down ..... something is going to break:)
Sorry I actually was referring to breaking legs with hard panniers while sitting down and getting a leg caught in a crash.
I don't worry about panniers breaking as much as limbs.
FYI, triumph has a neat system of having the panniers pop off if hit, my buddy "tested" this successfully on the Lolo Motorway

Great ideas! I decided to live with my side bags for another couple of years, but I did buy a Givi Outback Trekker topbox, and love the latch system with the Givi's. My locks were almost worn after 2 seasons of touring, Instead of removing the latch spring (good idea), I added snowmobile hood latch straps, since they seem to last many seasons and put up with abuse in all kinds of weather.

Would love to see the build!

So I’m new to the Tenere and I have the factory side bags. I’m thinking about adding the factory trunk but I’m a bit confused about mounting it. Does it bolt directly to the stock rack or do I need a mount? The Yamaha website doesn’t say anything about it. Thanks in advance.

If you have the oem luggage rack, just remove it and the oem trunk will mount directly to the rack bracket. What year is your bike? Early models need a metal bar to reinforce the bracket, later models have the bar included.

If you have this under your rack the trunk will fit on. The two white pads are my anti-rattle solution. You will need the lock that should have come with the bike 20190710_174157.jpg

While we are on factory luggage. Why the heck is there a welded loop on the left side bottom mount and not one on the right? Would have made great tie down points for longer bungee cords/

Lock? Nope. I guess the previous owner didn’t leave it with the dealer I bought the bike from. So, do I order another lock set?

You can buy a single lock from Yamaha but it will have a different key than your bike. A locksmith should be able to key it to match your ignition.

I've got the OEM side cases on my 2019 ST. I'd like a top box that can hold my helmet and doesn't interfere with the opening of the side cases. The OEM stuff is steep. I bought the side cases at a 10% discount while buying the bike, but they were still expensive. Is there a place that sells OEM for a more reasonable price, or should I just go Givi or another brand?

I installed givi all over my 2009 FZ1. I used it for camping and all sorts of fun. The ST is like a more capable and less high strung FZ1. The ST is a lot more comfortable too.

Holan (iirc 25L?) Nomada is a bit big but can hold a backpack to get to the office, then then helmet, gloves, compressor, some tools, and an air vest while parked.

Shipping what is essentially a box of air from Poland was a bit expensive but the end price was close to buying anything else because the purchase price was low.

Or just remove the wafers all together in all the locks. I took all them out of all three of my locks so I can turn them with the tip of my pocket knife or screwdriver. No more worry about being stranded with a bent key.

Also they look normal so no one would know, and the key still inserts and works of course incase you are in front of the crack heads at walmart.
