I read a couple of posts on here about lithium batteries, and I’m sure a lithium starter pack, that have burst into flames under certain conditions, which I don’t really understand.

I’m planning to purchase a starter pack in the not too distant future and would like to know what I’m getting into.

If anyone has definite knowledge in why these lithium products are prone to mini explosions, could you please offer an explanation.

Much appreciated
Boris

I work with them and teach electric vehicle firefighting. While battery packs are capable of bursting into fast growing flames, they generally don't explode.

Bottom lines are:
(1) LOTS of positive reviews and avoid the least expensive Chinese cells.
(2) If carrying on the bike, they need to be heavily protected from vibration. Do not let them ride on the inside of a metal box or bottom of a tank bag. There are hundreds to thousands of aluminum and copper foils in each cell and any of them can start a thermal runaway.
(3) If one starts to smoke or burn, dump it into water or quickly fill whatever it is in.

The Antigravity brand is really good. I have both a starter and a ps-45 from them.

Make sure to get their beefy SAE pigtail that lets you safety jump your bike from the sae plug. It makes things a snap.

I'm a fan of the EarthX Brand. The stability of LifPo4 is unmatched. The battery stays fully charged for almost a year left packed away. I have already used it to jump my wife's bone dead car battery.
