o_O Maybe it's all the people that have moved from CA to TX. 'Cuz, I'm seeing the same stuff that Chris is. Driver's around here, who weren't the best to start with, have gone insane. Speeding, running stop signs/lights, and riding their ATVs on public roads. The city my kid works for got into a pursuit a 4 wheeler, that went all the way to the next town. A 19 yr old girl was killed in Arlington TX when she crashed her ATV on one of the major streets. And, none. . . . and I mean none. . . . of the ATV riders. . . . from 12 yrs old on up. . . . have been wearing a helmet. Shorts, t-shirts, sandals or shoes. . . . that's it.

I've seen the same thing in Denver metro and there have been news stories about extreme speeding of 30-40 over. Cops are not patrolling but looking to crack down hard on reckless violations.

Just think of how very hard of a job both law enforcement, fire department, EMT, and medical have dealing with this crap. I cannot blame LEO one damn bit for not enforcing minor infractions. All these men and women are putting themselves at a higher risk than what they signed up for.

A thinking person would assume that, but it is incredible what conspiracy plots are being circulated and the number of non thinking people are out there. Our governor in IL has a live FB update each day and along with the live FB video, people can post comment, which show up in real time. Some are just plain partisan and serve no purpose, other than to encourage partisanship instead of cooperation in this time of crisis. However, what shocked me is the number of just plain stupid posts. One theme is that the advent of 5G was what started all this, it was predicted years ago, Bill Gates is behind it, the vaccine they are developing will enable the government to track you and even kill you with the push of a button if they wish. One lady said she would fight that vaccine with all her life. Just amazing to me the level of stupidity there is out in the general population.

Driving wise, I live close to Dirt Dad and also see that speeds have gone up a bit but am continually amazed by how light the traffic is. I drove the north side of the DC beltway Thursday between 5:30-6 pm when it is normally a parking lot of stop and roll a few feet. I was doing 60-65 staying with traffic. Drove from Annapolis to Columbia last Saturday evening and would go for miles without seeing anybody on the highway.

I really appreciate Cantab posting about the NZ health care system, as I've run across similar systems in my travels around the world. Right now, we in the US are subsidizing the overhead of every insurance company through high premiums. Plus those who can't afford insurance just use the hospital ER entrance, which is absolutely the most expensive and stupid way to deliver medical care that we also indirectly pay for. I'd rather not pay for the slackers but every society has them and this chart shows an average for what each of us are losing from our pay checks!
per-capita-total-current-health-care-expenditures-us-and-selected-countries-2010-healthcosts.png

What are we getting? Some of the worst health care in the world in life expectancy, infant deaths, etc! How many dollars would YOU pay to live out this coming week, for an additional 3-4 years? And before somebody says it is just American lifestyle, the Canadians are pretty darn similar and I know a lot of out of shape Brits and Germans so notice the difference in this chart.
life-expectancy-at-birth-oecd-2017.png

I really used to be pretty far right in thinking I don't want the Government involved with my health care, but came to realize that ship has already sailed. The Government is ALREADY running much of the health care, so that thinking just isn't valid and hasn't been for decades. There is no way to un-do it and nobody is going to be turned away by an ER, no matter how far to the right we might be.

At this point I do think we as a nation need to stop trying to straddle this fence and just come up with a Govt basic plan which also allows private plans if individuals want. It's what the ACA was before that plan got bastardized into ObamaCare. Yes, we will finally acknowledge that we are subsidizing the slackers but WE ALREADY ARE so we need to end our doing so in the most expensive way possible. It also is the one and only way to cut the open sore of money going to litigation lawyers to bring down costs of drugs and care, because the Government is the only entity which can limit litigation against itself.

I have/had family in Germany, Norway, and Canada and all of them have additional plans to go to their own choice of doctor they want to. Heck, even mainland China has done this for 30 years! When I had guys get injured on jobs in China on two trips (Dalian and Beijing - I'm bad luck), what they got was absolutely as good as what they would have here. We were Americans working with counterpart Chinese investigators, so I have no doubt they would avoid taking us somewhere crappy. Even so, the Chinese middle class is so big and so much like here now that I don't think what my guys got was exceptional.

What I have not looked into is why it seems to work so well in some countries and not others. For example, Canada has Govt health care with additional insurance possible yet the Canadians I know bitch about the wait times and expense far more than the Aussies, Kiwis, Germans, Norwegians, and even the grumbling Brits I've known.

Sorry for the rant. It's a rainy Sunday night.

an Austin texas police officer friend told me that they are only stopping the most serious offenders , minor stuff not so much. city buses running everyday with up to 20 riders , everywhere else its the 10 rule , people see the mixed message the city government puts out .... can't have 10 or more people in a room unless its a bus. people are going to act free , its what we do , because we are free (for now ) . I took a motorcycle ride to Lockhart Texas today to buy bbq for lunch , my neighbor rode his vstrom . had a nice time. spent between us almost 100.00 at the restaurant , keeping people employed. and I have at least 3 bbq meals to look forward to over the next few weeks.

No dig at you holligl

I reckon you fella's only worry/think about 'the numbers this' the numbers say that' just Stay Home, forget about other countries and your numbers.

The commercialization of healthcare in the US is just ridiculous its just greed over wellbeing , sure i have medical insurance in NZ - im covered for Hospital and Specialists care 100% , costs NZ$347 P/M for my wife and I aged 52, eg if i need knee surgery i can go 'public' and wait on the list or i'll go private and get done next week. BUT if i crash my bike and need hospital care for whatever say broken bones etc I DONT PAY A CENT for anything, i dont need to worry about 'how im gonna pay' or 'who's gonna pay' the Govt picks up the tab and 80% of my pay. Its payed for in a % from my wages and a percentage in my bike Rego NZ$519 per year per bike (anything over 600cc, less for smaller) and car Rego as well per year per car NZ$127, simple.

Read this and thought WTF

I think its going to take more than a Vaccine to flip this shiddy virus , human habits need to change.
No offense taken, this is a global issue. Glad to see your country is doing well. It is hard to compare given the differences we have.

Your country is high on my list of desired places to visit. Hope to make it there some day.

everybody take a breath through cotton filtered mask of the government mandate that they say really doesn't work but you should or must wear one but should make you calm down. and calm down . if you get this and die its bad . if you get this and live its good. as of today most will not get this and that's good . all this could change for the better or the worse . how much of this is fake news how much is real honest news , our American news media is no better than the "national enquirer " probably worse . take precautions use your brains and the odds are with you not getting this (yet) today. yesterdays announced numbers were over a million (7 plus billion population) infected ,83k deaths , 200k recovered . world wide 83k out of a million is a fairly low death rate (unless you died from it then it was a 100 % death rate in your case ) in the US 200k plus infected and (12k plus deaths ) the majority out of NYC . 330 million Americans most do not have it , but a large number have a growing despair and poverty from this , that is the truth and the real impact of what's been done to free nations everywhere . and that impact will be more profound than this virus on our lives in the long term.
Yes, agree, future repercussions resulting from these current times will no doubt be worse than the immediate effects of the virus itself. Read crime and poverty along with a host of other things. Sad sad sad.

"Kindly try not to cloud the issue with facts." It's funny how whenever someone debunks a conspiracy theory or points out a shortcoming in the data presented, they are accused of anger. "But I just asked a question!" So, when did you stop hitting your wife? It's snark, folks. Snark is not necessarily anger. Boris "I keep shaking hands" Johnson is in the ICU. It's just like the flu, right?

I want to go on a ride, but I stay at home instead and become increasingly snarky. I had viral pneumonia in my teens and it was not funny. I'm approaching 50 and want to avoid doing The Boris. We all have our ways of dealing with this, and denial is one of them. Can we agree that we're all scared and want this shit to go away?

So, here's my version of steam-letting. Snark away, maybe we can all get a chuckle out of it. ;)
Okay

I blame the education system in this country, or the lack thereof. Back when we knew less about the world, we required our high school students to know more in order to graduate. Now its all about standardized testing and teaching to the test, rather than critical thinking and analysis. Its really sad that the movie "Idiocracy" turned from a comedy to a documentary...

Absolutely. My kids are fairly intelligent, and have a decent amount of common sense. But, sometimes they struggle with "problem solving". I've raised/taught them to think for themselves, and not ne "sheeple. They've worked for, and earned everything, they have. . . . but, they know almost nothing about history. Many "kids" out there though, are still living "off" of their parents, and depend on their parents to think for them. "Those who fail to learn from history are condemned repeat it." -- Winston Churchill I think I first saw a version of that phrase back when I was in fifth grade. Even then, it made sense to me. Learn form your mistakes. I've always tried not to screw up the same way twice. "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again end expecting different results" -- Albert Einstein. I just don't know where we're going to end up. . . .

I don't have any children, but I do know of several families with children who don't allow their children to grow up. Hence, a lot of younger people remain dependent on their parents, read still ducking the hind tit and living in Mom and Dad's basement.

I hated school I felt it was holding me back. I was younger i never understood why the things they taught us would be help me create a business, fix a car or build something. After college I learned that much of it was rhetoric or straight up bs to give a someone a job. In the last few years I've been seeing a degree with 30k debt is required to file paperwork and answers phone calls at 14 an hour.

My totally unfactual thoughts. The sooner your state has emergency hospitals in place the sooner you get to roam. How far? The states will be responsible for their own so it seems interstate travel may be in jeopardy. How that works for a tourism state like Colorado? Not well for many.

The economic engine must get up and running and we are going to need to develop an immunity to Covid 19. For all that have practiced social distancing you have done your job well. Go forth and produce revenue and pay your taxes. May you have health and happiness.

I will do my part in retirement and spend my money recreating dammit.

The place I retired from had a new boss that required a four year college degree for employment, and removed the incentives for former military applicants. During my exit interview, I inquired why he was so hung up with a college degree. His reply was "high schools aren't teaching what they used to". I agreed with him, but told him that the colleges weren't teaching what the applicants were lacking. Moto.monk is right, jobs are requiring college for employment, but are not willing to pay for it.
