Guys ,
If you know any great deals on leftover new Teneres please let me know , I'm in market .
Fly and ride is not a problem as long as the deal is great .

This is my trusty steed or should I say what ever is left from it . I'm in slightly better shape ... well sort of , but anyway time for new wheels . After a long research and a close battle between Super Tenere and Africa Twin Adventure Sports I decided on Super Tenere . Just more solid , quality well thought out and designed bike IMO . Yes of course I wish it had a 21" front wheel and more ground clearance , but I guess I have compromise .

Look in the for sale section of this forum. Some deals with various aftermarket goodies you may like. Did you try to go poaching with the VTX?

It's Honda VTX1800T3 modded from head to toe , one of the kind honestly ... In this case no body to blame , but me : tired , sleepy , riding at night in the rain right after tornadoes swept the area , it was a recipe for disaster to begin with . I was on the trip to Mexico and was hoping to save me an extra day while riding at night and get to the border faster . Yup ... here I am with titanium plate holding my collar bone together , severe concussion ( thank God for the helmet ) and bruised lung . Still don't remember a damn' thing from the accident .

Very modded indeed. That sucks. At least you're still typing. I hope you recover fully w/o any lasting issues. The best luck I had finding a good deal was getting my wife to toss it out on Facebook that I was looking for a Tenere. One of her friends several states away saw one at a local dealer and passed it on. Turned out to be worth the fly and ride for a 1k ride home. Easy for me and I was able to stay with the friends there and save on a hotel room even.

If you find a new left over or low mile bike a few years old, it's worth calling Yamaha, (YES Claims and Coverage - 1-800-962-7926), to find out if it has remaining factory warranty or remaining YES extended warranty. The factory is 12 months, YES can be 12 to 48 months. Both a transferable at no cost. Some dealers try to get an inspection fee, most do not. It costs them nothing to do it. You just have to prove ownership and usually bring the bike in for VIN verification. Once what ever warranty is in your name, you can add the YES or more YES up to the maximum 48 month over the phone. There are good threads on that on this forum.

Late summer last year found 16 standards for $10500 out the door plus tax. Bought a 16 es for not much more.

I think I'm looking for standard . I love the idea of ES and adjustments on a fly , but I'm planning to do a lot off-roading while carrying luggage for my travels . I think a dialed in custom suspension would suite my riding style better .
What are your off-road experiences with ES ?

It seems like the non ES have a harder spring on the rear, than the ES. (and front on non ES is full adjustable, I think I have read that the ES front is not)
So if you dont plan to replace anything regarding suspension, I think it is a good choice to take the non ES

My experience off-road is that there is not enough ground clearance and it is easy to bottom out and drag the skid plate. I have found that setting the es to two up with luggage and +3 is the only way I can ride semi aggressively off road.

I then have to remind myself that I’m on a 600 lb bike.

If you are going to ride with luggage off road and be aggressive I do believe the standard Tenere would be a better choice. You can set it up for your riding.

I am really liking the easy adjustability of pushing a button and having a stiffer suspension then when I have to hit the slab back to town pushing a button and having a soft ride on the pavement.

I had to accept that if I want to ride off road super aggressive, I need to bring a different bike.

I also noticed that the Es had a better resale value.

Great info Mak10 . Thank you !!! Those were exactly my thoughts . On the other side is there anything aftermarket to make ES suspension more off-road worthy ? Something to maybe make it stiffer and to prevent bottoming out ?

See what you can negotiate into the deal. The left over '16 probably has full 12 month warranty still, but double check with Yamaha in Cypress, CA at the number I posted earlier. Also see if the dealer will toss in the 4 years of YES and perhaps some service or accessories you may want. I'd personally be happier with getting the first oil change and the first 26000 service thrown in than say OEM panniers. Lots of other luggage choices. Win-win for the dealer, as you're coming back to them for service, IF it's close enough to work for you.

It's relatively cheap to do a spring swap on a non-ES bike. The stock shock will support a much heavier spring. I was running an 1100 lb spring for about 50k each on two different OEM shocks before I moved to a custom suspension.

Hi, Luke. Glad to see that you have finally decided on a Tenere. You saw my 12 with Ohlins front and back, that I loved. I later got a 14 ES and love it better. Much easier to push the button to try other settings than to stop, get out the tools and try a different setting on the Ohlins, then ride it a bit and see if I went the right way or not, hah, hah. The ES adjusts the preload and damping on the shock and adjusts the damping on the forks. The right fork controls the rebound and the left controls the compression. There are 84 different setting combinations that can be done with the push of a button. Some have replaced the ES shock spring with a slightly heavier spring and liked it. I will keep an eye out for a deal on a leftover. Many times you can get a well set up later model for a bargain price. If I see something like that I'll let you know about that also.

Good to hear from you and glad that you are doing well after that crash.

Luke, I just sent you PM with a link for an ad for a pre owned gen 2 Super Tenere, not far from you. Great setup and if I were looking, I would buy this one.
