Both flashing the ecu and the clutch basket upgrade have huge and continuous postings for YEARS now.

Yet both have OVERWHELMING support by those that have done them.

Yet............

We are funny creatures.

A Gen1 Tenere with a good flash, a clutch basket upgrade, and an update cam chain tensioner, is a substantially superior package to the OEM version.
Other than cruise control, it's as close to a Gen 2 bike as you can get.

Chased those annoying vibrations on my 2012 for a while, re-rebalancing tires and throttle body sync didn't remove them.
Finally upgraded the clutch basket to the 2014 version and problem solved.
Wish I hadn't waited till 26,000 miles!
The bike is now a joy to ride.

Ordered everything from Partzilla, and was getting anxious to get it all installed before a 3,000 mile trip to Arkansas...a couple of small parts in the order were on back order and holding up the clutch basket shipment...
When I contacted them, they came through with flying colors getting the parts to me pronto just ahead of the big trip and didn't even charge me for shipping!
So was able to get the clutch basket installed and enjoy the big ride.

I also ordered a new 2014 Cam Chain Tensioner at that time, but didn't have time to do the valves before that trip, so just started on that last week...
Well, I should've bought the Graves MANUAL CCT as I couldn't get the Yamaha CCT to release after numerous frustrating tries...I've ordered the Graves and have a message in to Partzilla about returning the Yamaha CCT...hope it's not too late to do that...

Hey guys,

Am about to follow Motowalt into the CCT & clutch basket replacement camp. I really love this bike and plan to keep it for as many miles as it will take. Right or wrong; at 44,000 miles, am replacing the clutch plates with the Barnett kit. Any advice any one is willing to offer will be appreciated.

I've been off this forum for several years and would like to thank the MODS for pullin my log in out of the trash bin.

Cheers

Mike,
I reused the stock clutch plates as they were not worn with less than 30,000 miles..
I also sent you a PM

You might want to PM Tabasco, he has plenty of experience with the Barnett kit.

Yep. I ordered my basket from the Yamaha dealer in Arkansas during our Tenere rally at the dogpatch.
Then ordered the Barnett pieces from Tabasco.

Then delivered the bike and all the kit to Bruce's place. (Combo)

He graciously installed everything while I goofed off sitting in a chair in his shop.
Not sure I even paid much attention. (There were a group of crazy old Tenere farts there and Combo was the only one focusing\working)

All I remember was saying to myself "WOW" on the way home.

I had a 2012 with the original clutch basket. I never changed it before I traded in the bike. But in my case the previous owner used a 10w-40 oil. I switched to Rotella T6. After switching I noticed the 3k vibration greatly reduced to almost not noticeable.
What is the viscosity of that oil? I'm not familiar with the brand.

Wow, an Original silver sided Tenere. The basket will fit, you'll like it. Have you changed the cam chain tensioner yet? The early 2012 bikes had a few issues, haven't heard much about the Originals though.

Nope, most of them were fine, mine was. I just liked the idea of the extra 10 oz of mass the new basket added to the crank. Changed the manners of the motor quite a bit to me.

I have a 2013 with about 43000 miles. The difference the new style basket made was amazing. It finally made the bike come alive. After doing the ecu flash many years ago, I didn't really notice the difference. The bike seemed to be bucket of bolts at 80 mph and did not like going that speed or faster. After the basket swap and the mcct change over last summer, the bike is quicker on road and I think, better mannered off road. It is like a whole new bike now. 90 mph is a piece of cake, nice and quite as well as much smoother. It seems like another 10-20 hp was added.

Some guys that have only ridden with the old clutch basket really can't say whether the upgrade is worth it. On my 2012 I didn't have a feeling the clutch vibration was a problem. I figured it was a twin cylinder motorcycle, and never going to be really smooth and vibration free, but for sure the newer basket is a night and day difference, but that being said, I would not pay hundreds of dollars. I would use the hundreds for gas and tires. I feel same about the flash, even though I do fall into the "never ridden with flash" and probably won't.

I have a 2013 bike and it was awful with the original basket. Wasn’t a problem when I got the bike with about 3k miles on it, but by 10k miles I wasn’t enjoying riding it anymore, it had gotten steadily worse. The vibration and the way it made the whole bike ride and feel was really bad. Gen2 basket and I had what felt like a new bike, so much better in every way. The three posts directly above will know exactly what I mean. The smoothness, quietness, the way it picks up its revs a little quicker.
