I am debating whether to bite the bullet and buy the later clutch basket for my 2012 S10,i have vibes around the 3k rpm mark, does the later basket really make a difference and make the engine a lot smoother?,i know its a big twin and will never be Triumph triple smooth but does the basket make a worthwhile improvement vs the cost of replacement?

I had a vibration @ 3K rpm that disappeared with the 14 clutch basket. While you've got it apart, put in a Barnett pressure plate and you will really be happy.

It depends. How many miles do you have on the bike?

My 2012 started becoming annoying around 65k miles with vibes in the 3k-4200 rpm range. Mostly under load, like climbing a long hill at a steady speed. I was fortunate to get involved with one of the fellows doing modifications to the original clutch baskets and he made most of the vibes go away. Which was freaking awesome since I had that in time for a 30 day, 8k mile Alaska trip. While on that trip in June of '14, Yamaha released the '14 part to the part system at a bizzare low price and I ordered it from my laptop while in Alaska or the Yukon for $27! When I got home, I suffered a CCT failure the day I was taking the bike in for the valve check/CCT change and clutch parts swap. After, which took 4 months, I do think the bike was smoother, but at that point I had a full top end rebuild and lots of other new parts, plus the '14 clutch basket, so it was hard for me to make a comparison.

Up until 50k or so, I never noticed the vibes. Every bike is different and every rider has their own sensitivity to vibes. Strictly IMHO, low mile owners probably don't need to spend the money on the Gen II basket unless and until the vibes in the 3-4k range start to bother them.

Had exactly the same thoughts last week.
My 2013 vibes and sounds like a bag of bolts so I've been looking into a new clutch basket.
I couldnt find one in Europe for less than £600. OUCH.
FINALLY found a good price in the States but they don't ship to U.K.
So my second best price of $326.99 delivered.
It's on it's way now. I know I will get stung on car and import duty but still a massive saving over rip off Britain.

That sounds pretty good. I'm not sure of import duty but there will be 20% vat and maybe carrier fee for getting it through customs.
I'm sure it will come to more than you've been quoted.
My clutch basket is coming from Partzilla.

After fighting my strom vibrations with a Terry Hinkle clutch basket , which really helped a bunch , and riding silverbullets 2013 , I can say ericv' s old bike I bought rides like a dream to me . I have not even thought about vibrations .

I had a 2012 with the original clutch basket. I never changed it before I traded in the bike. But in my case the previous owner used a 10w-40 oil. I switched to Rotella T6. After switching I noticed the 3k vibration greatly reduced to almost not noticeable.

Was that direct to Partzilla or via ebay?

Yes it was direct with Patzilla's website. I used priority mail but there is also express and a faster one for more money.

I found out what the vibration issue was from, from this site and got the dealer to change it for me, along with the new CCT, luckily for free!

I would have sold my 2012 S10 if the clutch basket didn't fix the vibrations I had.

Now it's a keeper!

Like Eric, I wasn't particularly sensitive to the 3K vibrations as reported here frequently. However, I did eventually swap out the basket and did a TB sync, and the before and after difference was easily noticed. Definitely a recommended mod.

Having come off a VStrom 1000 which was known to have a fairly pronounced "chudder" issue, I was dismayed to find that the ST had the same problem. The 2014 basket was a huge improvement.

it depends on how bad your original basket is.
I replaced the basket on my low mileage 2012 with the 2014 part, and there was only the slightest change.
A little bit less shake in the 3000 to 3500 rpm range, and a little bit *more buzz* above 4500 rpm.

I purchased a '14 clutch basket on the first day they became available and happend to get the only one in-stock the time. I figured at the price I would "try it" as sort of a guniea pig and if it didn't work I could go back. Well it made all the difference, solved the problem and made the bike a joy to ride. I tried other modes to fix the vibration and they helped but the source of the real problem was the basket. So I've been pleased with the change and several thousand miles later with no issues, my thought is that I would buy the basket at the higher price no doubt. Plus it's less money than buying a new Super T!
