The non-R model has been on my short list, but it has fallen off. Riding with friends this weekend we did a little swapping (of bikes). I was on the KTM 790 Adventure R, and the owner did a great job explaining to me how to turn off or at least reduce as much as possible all of the nanny settings on the bike. It was unleashed as it gets. The owner had dropped a tooth on the front sprocket to increase torque over a stock setup.

My ride was limited to twisty pavement and no dirt. Although I'm sure it would be a lot of fun in the dirt, the pavement was enough to let me know this would be no replacement for the Tenere.

Once on the bike I rolled 50 feet to a speed bump and the front wheel launched off the bump very nicely. I was hopeful. On to the twisties the bike's 21" wheel gave no concern and was a lot of fun twisting from side to side. Even with a smaller counter sprocket, forget about the idea of a power wheelie above first gear. Just not going to happen. To keep the bike in a responsive power range I kept the RPMs pretty high. Significant vibration in both handlebars and foot pegs in this range.

Near the end of the ride we were heading up hill and I dropped it down to first gear. Once again, was unable to muster a power wheelie out of it. I'm certain if I compressed the front forks, or found a bump I could bring it up, but the idea of twisting the throttle to lift the front was out of the question. Yes, the wheelie control was off (Rally - Rally - 1).

The owner offered let me take it out to the dirt, but it was the end of the day, and I knew what I needed to know. There is no place in my life where this bike fits. I had hoped the lighter weight would somehow make the smaller engine sanctifying to me. It was not. Too much vibration, too little power. No doubt a great bike, just not for me.

The rider on my Tenere, was a current owner of a V-Strom 650. A former owner of the big Strom, a Concours, and many other bikes. He was shocked at how big the Tenere felt to him. He loved the engine, and the performance of the shaft vs the Concours' shaft. His final assessment, the Tenere felt agricultural to him. Just not sporty. Coming from the little Strom, I can appreciate that.

I appreciated the opportunity to try. I have to wonder why I'm thinking about giving up the Tenere. It does fit me so well. Even if it is a big tractor. :)

The 790 is a way different bike than the Super Tenere. If you want a fair "KTM comparison" try out the 1090. It is much lighter, about the same HP and way better suspended than the Super Tenere. The 1190 and 1290 are BEASTS!! I have ridden both and they take your breath away at every hard twist of the throttle.

Well, thanks for your review of the 790 KTM
I went to a KTM and other brands of motorcycles dealership with a friend who was looking for a new helmet.
I sat on the KTM 790, the one with the hand guards and windscreen.
However after reading your review and comments I won't be buying one of these.
I had a 201 6 Africa Twin for two years, 30,000 km and presently riding a 2018 Tenere ES and just turned 30,000 .
For now the Ten does it for me.

Both CW and I rode one of those at a KTM Demo Days. Yes, I understand exactly what you are talking about.

I just had it in my head that I may want to go smaller and lighter for my main bike. I'm not sure that is going to work for me. I may just need to get something more aggressive for my little bike...like a 690 Enduro. I did like that one when I rode CWs.

 Sprocket?! Almost stopped reading. :D I LOVE LOW RPM TORQUE! Addicted to it. Subjectively speaking, I love the way she sounds like a tractor. . . .

Just let me dust off the seat,
Put your pretty little arms around me, hell yeah
You can climb up in my lap and drive if you want to,
Girl you know you got me to hold on to,
We can go to town but baby if you'd rather,
I'll take you for a ride on my big green tractor--Jason Aldean

Thank You for the review! Always like to hear reviews from those who have the current bike I have. Wondering if I'm missing out on something...

Torque you say?

I'm sure a few of you have a Tesla or other EV and can tell stories. I got a chance to test drive a Tesla Model 3 Performance (front and rear motors) last week on some twisty roads and WOW!
:D
If your friend thought the Super Tenere felt big, he ought to try the big Triumph.

Ludicrous speed! The only production internal combustion vehicle that can compete, beat, the monster Tesla is the Demon. I watched Jay Leno get spanked by an old lady in a Tesla. He was in his Cobra. (the real one)

Sounds like your Tenere isn't flashed. Besides adding more power, it also makes it a lot smoother, eliminating that agricultural feeling.

Am I right?

I've never been big on doing permanent things that reduce the market appeal of a bike. There is certainly a smaller group of people who will trust a flashed bike to buy it in the used market. I'm that person. Who did that flash, did they know what they were doing, what issues lay a head because of the flash? I'm much more likely to buy a factory bike that does what I want it to do, unless I can get it for next to nothing. Which is one of the reasons I'd consider buying another DR650 which has been fully tricked out by someone who now has to sell it for less than a stock bike. It's cheap enough I might be willing to do it.

My 18ES is stock. I actually removed the Arrow headers from PO after a couple months.
The bike feels great and I like the stock exhaust note, (my Africa Twin is a little throatier).
Would be great to ride a flashed S10 to see what I’m missing, (or maybe not)

I love the sound. (completely OE) There no reason not to ride a flashed bike. See if you like it. If you do, ya' do. . . . if ya' don't, ya' don't. I love my throttle, and engine braking. Xclimation wants me to ride his so I can see the difference. Almost afraid to. If I do like it, it's going to cost me. :)

Well if you do like it, I guess you can weigh the cost proposition. If it’s worth it, I would do it also.
I use sport mode for street and touring for off road with few complaints.

There's a touring mode? Oh yeah, I call that "stall the motor at every stop sign" mode.

I always considered it rain mode. I liked sport for off pavement. But I have a twisted sense of what a bike should do off pavement.

Sport works great for roosting, but I find it’s a little jerky over large bumps and rocks.
Maybe I just need more practice.
