Hi guys,

can you help, bike is a gen 1 2013 with 24000 miles on clock, my rear pads run low in 2016 at 14000 miles, so i bought genuine yamaha ones and replaced them then dec 2016 14000 miles, now bikes been ok.
i washed the bike a week or to ago put it away wet, now yesterday i was taking rear wheel off to replace the disc bolts for new titanium ones and paint the disc cover it was grubby, as i was taking the spindle out i could not pull the caliper up off the disc it was tight i managed to knock it up off with rubber mallet.

now the yamaha pads that were put in 3 yrs ago and only 10000 miles are virtually gone the back one has about 2mm the piston one has abit more and its grubby.

SO can i tidy this up myself, once the rear wheel is all painted and back togher i can i think just about squeese the caliper back over the disc, once back if i then remove the 2 caliper bolts take the pads back out how to i clean the piston thats sticking out and generally get it right.

also can you recommened a rear pad that,ll work ok with our original disc i can,t get another yamaha set everything shut

thanks

I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide.
When I bought my 2013 it was sticking/seized.

I took the caliper off (did not disconnect fluid line) took off the pads, and cleaned up as much of the piston exposed as I could with a scotch bright pad. Then I put on the piston side pad and squeezed it in a vise and it finally came free. I ran it back in and out a few times cleaned it up as much as I could and it started moving just fine.

BTW the rebuild kit for the 2 seals in the piston are only $30. I would have rebuilt it, but wanted to ride and not wait for parts so tried squeezing it first.

I bought these cheap rear pads on amazon a few months back (roughly 4000 miles on them now) and they are fine, I will use them again. Not super stopping power like EBC HH's but more that satisfactory for 1/3 the price.
I see you are in the UK but here is the US amazon link might be able to find them on the UK site.

Make sure the pins #7 are cleaned and greased real good. The caliper has to float on these pins or it will bind up. While "cheap pads" may have decent material on the braking surface the glue holding the pad to the backing plate may be low quality and allow the pad to come completely off the backing plate. There can be no legitimate argument against buying good pads. $40 bucks every year or two is a drop in the bucket compared to the cost of buying and riding a motorcycle. JMHO
