Aren't all politicians "low level"? :D
I’m unpaid, I’ve served the community I live in for 34 years and I do my best. If I thought my community would be better off without me I wouldn’t do it. The area I live in is pretty conservative so I don’t really have much chance of winning but I stand every time so that people have the choice.

I find this thread interesting as it helps me to better understand what moves the American people to behave as they do.

I've visited the US several times.
It's one of my favorite destinations.
I love a lot of what the US has to offer - amazing sceneries, tasty food and interesting hospitable people - but are not blind to the dark sides and shortcomings of the society.
I count several Americans among my friends and are genuinely concerned about what have been going on in the US in recent years.

I really don't care much about Republicans vs. Democrats - to me it's all about how you behave and treat others, not how you vote. There are decent sensible people and idiots on both sides - unfortunately the idiots have been stealing the scene for a while now.
I hope the waste majority of decent people on both sides soon realize that they have to overcome their differences and stand together to solve the problems that are tearing the country apart.

The flag's still hanging in the garage and we'll still be here for your next trip.

Absolute respect for the Thin Blue Line et al. Incredible resolve in the face of such terrorism.

As it is said: Taking a knee, versus battering a cop with an American flag?

Birther escalates to now...
[Deleted video could have been seen as one-sided even though it was from a major network - CW]

I think the sun is going to rise today . enjoy the day . the sun may not rise tomorrow . then what . give it a moment . there it is . something we all know and trust in . will you catch the virus today ? maybe you will . will you live through it ? probably will (almost 99 % do ) . can you trust your government (only the foolish will ) ? that's the basis for our government system as set up for this nation by the founders .you cannot trust the government . big reason the 2nd amendment is in our bill of rights . because you can't trust government . ask a minority group any where in the world ,even here about trusting the government . only a fool would . history always and has always shown this to be true . the system of government here in the states is one of the best ever devised by man , it would work better than it does if people would follow it . but they color outside the lines or ignore the lines completely . when the states ratified the constitution there was a stinking problem sitting in the corner that was completely contradictory to the document that had been ratified (kicking the problem like a can down the street is not a new idea in politics ) that problem was fixed in form in 1865 with the defeat of the south . changing mens hearts about our relationships one to another has taken up the rest of the 156 years from then till now . each individual is responsible for how a person is treated by them . each person decides their values in life ,good bad or indifferent . each person by their own biases decide so much about the world we live in . this week America changes , and it changes for ever . nothing in our personal lives stay the same , and so goes our government . im not in agreement with the party that is taking charge in a few days , I have heard from their own mouths their plans . I pray they fail . that is my view , I have 75 million friends who feel the same way . the other side won , will will see and experience their best effort .... all of the world will to....

Why don’t you elect politicians that you can trust? Surely there are enough good men and women in the US? You just have to seek them out. Sitting there moaning about how rubbish the current crop are won’t change anything. Find alternatives that you can trust and get behind.

4 years culminated in this. A divided nation. 75 million polarised against 80 million. I would think that the hope would be that everyone can TRY and find some common ground. I would like to think, in my naive, simple view, that people all around the world, including the US, have MORE in common with each other. Jeez...., there are 7-8 billion of us, we must have done something right!

There are numerous studies and articles about why we keep giving ourselves such horrible choices in candidates on both sides of the aisle. Example article:

The Founders were prophetic in writing that we would have problems if we became a two party system and here we are.

But if a good old boy from rural Texas, who has served his country, is honest as the day is long and has worked all his life to pay for his possessions but is not rich stands for government what will stop him? He hasn’t done anything that the media can screw him on.
Is it just money?
Having money certainly favours politicians in the UK (most of the current cabinet are millionaires) but we have also had ex postmen and dock yard workers in our cabinets. We currently have a single mother who dragged herself out of benefits by doing an online politics university course serving in the shadow cabinet. Talk about walking the walk. Can that happen in the US?

As CW said, the perversion of our system of government comes from the 2 party system. We actually had a very well qualified candidate in 2016 who appeared on the ballot in all 50 states, yet because he was running as a Libertarian, he only received 3% of the vote.

One of my favorite quotes (though I don't know who said it originally): In the US, we have a system of government designed by geniuses and run by morons...

For a country that values liberty so much, why was a libertarian seen as a bad thing?

Money certainly does favour politicians. The main opposition party, Labour, isn’t short of millionaires, including the shadow cabinet.
