. . . . If anything this forum shows how much common ground people with different views can have. . . .
For the most part, we're here because we like a certain bike. For us to like the certain bike, we have to have certain likes, and dislikes. A certain list of prerequisites for a bike. Which means. . . . in a certain way. . . . we are thinking alike. :D

As a proud socialist I can say that socialism has always been a good thing. Only since Trump has it become a naughty word in the US.
In your country yes then socialism should be respected. It is the basis on your countries wellbeing. The United States is not a socialist country. Anybody who does not agree with or respect our capitalistic ways needs to move out of our country.

I feel the same way about the desecration of the Capitol. Its symbolism rivals that of the flag.
I could not agree more. Where is the American flag? All I see are people disrespecting our capitol. This kind of behavior is ok?

And this is DC once again later the same evening. This is called a peaceful protest. If you dig you can find the full video of torching right around the corner from the White House. This happened just a few months ago and not a word of it was breathed by mainstream media. What BS!!

I would like to respond to Matt's title and answer the question.
Yes it is political and I congratulate you for getting away with it.
I thought political threads were not allowed here and then not only the moderator accepts it but joins right in with his own bias political post.
Not for thee but yes for me Good grief .

To be honest political on forums is troublesome at best. I think over here we are genuinely shocked and interested ay the same time. Dont forget what happens over there usually comes over here. So you can understand we are worried for ourselves aswell as for all you guys overthere.

... have no effect on others views or anything else, so why bother.
Pretty much my rule on these types of threads. I learned long ago that regardless of my brilliant advocacy for my position, minds are already made up and no internet exchange (or in person) is going to result in a light bulb moment of clarity.

I usually don't last long in a thread like this. I start learning more than I want about how certain members think about political issues, and sometimes that's not a good thing.

Over the last 10 years I've had the pleasure of meeting, riding with, drinking with, eating with, and generally hanging out with a good number of people who have been regulars on this and other forums. It's been a source of great enjoyment of the Adventure bike experience, and I'm grateful for those encounters. When you see a thread that gets into the political, it can help you realize at the next get together, avoid topic "x" with person "y", but usually it means I don't want to go to those threads.

Getting into an argument on topics over which neither of you have any control can easily be counterproductive to forming good friendships over the things on which you do both agree. I know beyond any doubt I have good friends online and offline with whom I strongly disagree with politically...we don't about those things. That approach has worked pretty well.

Wow! I thought you had a democracy. Not a lot of tolerance there. Or is this the famous Chris sarcasm?

Scoop, Madhatter, and others -

The reason for letting the thread run is because the subject had already been injected into several other threads and you just didn't see where those got deleted. Again and again, so when this thread popped up, it basically gave a venue and place to contain the discussion.

To be honest, I've been tied up since yesterday and was kinda dreading logging in tonight to see where this thing went. Like a couple of you before me, I want to thank people for keeping it civil. I was guessing that somebody would start lobbing a non-stop series of flaming posts that sucked the air away from anybody with an opposing view, so bravo for letting others weigh in.

Sorry Madhatter and not that it matters, but I am not a left wing lib, I'm a Republican and generally vote fairly conservative but I really do try to understand where both sides come from. Being a retired Federal investigator, having gone to FBI Academy classes, worked with Bureau people for 30+ years, and still teaching accident investigation to military classes among others, I identify pretty close to law enforcement and military. Past work with my counterparts at the FBI post-blast bomb unit is how I knew about the growth of right wing extremism and why I posted the chart about domestic terrorism.
btw - Notice that the chart DOES show left wing extremism as well as the right. My guess is that last year's bump in the left-wing is from the BLM violence and 2008 for the right-wing is probably the post-election anti-Obama attacks.

Totally separate from left-right politics, my own view of the 2016 election has always been that it was a choice between Clinton as a cancer or Trump as a heart attack. I remember saying to Dirt_Dad back then that my guess was either one would end up getting impeached and fwiw I wrote in for Kasich because I couldn't bring myself to vote for either one. The reason I'm so anti-Trump is that after working elbow to elbow with FBI from New York for over a year in the 90s, I had an intense education about how closely Trump was tied to the NY/NJ mafia 20 years before he announced his candidacy. I'd rather not just post much on a open forum but would be happy to share it over beers with you and there's a lot to be found if you Google into who helped Jim Kallstrom get John Gotti, Trump's sister, who Trump bought the NJ casino land from, and who sold Trump the concrete that the Tower is made of. This was all WAY before Trump got into politics so people can't say what was recorded back then was politically motivated in relation to Trump's Presidency.

This isn't about Trump's Administration policies so while I believe there were both wins and losses I won't go there. As for what happened Wednesday, since it's so close to us I know both Democrats and Republicans who were on the mall but had better sense than to go into the Capitol.

BUT - Wednesday was a LOT more than just some broken windows and now 6 deaths! Chris Christy (another Republican and Trump supporter till now) summed it up well today by stating that the Executive Branch (Trump with Giuliani & Junior) incited the crowd to create an attack against the Legislative Branch and if that's not sedition* as part of a coup, then what is? I agree with Christy's summary and will add that Charles Manson didn't stab anybody.
* Sedition is defined as "conduct or speech inciting people to rebel against the authority of a state or monarch"

The reason the police shot the woman Ashli Babbitt is that she was at the front of the pack trying to break in to where the lawmakers were put into refuge and the police truly felt the lawmakers would be killed or hurt if the mob got to them after the window was shattered. Those cops knew they were the last line of defense, LOOKING at rioters, who'd gotten deep IN the building, with wrist ties (implying a pre-meditated intent to take hostages), and brandishing weapons. They would've heard "officer down" on their radios by then and more than once. That's the reality of how bad things were and I absolutely would have pulled the trigger if standing in their shoes.

So far it looks like people got into the building at least three ways. The rioters put teargas into one entrance, momentarily disabling the police who hadn't expected it. That was clearly pre-planned. Everybody has seen the photos of the people breaking through windows. Third, it looks like at least one door was opened from the inside. We have LOTS of protests in this city and nobody has ever tried to get in before, so I'm personally not surprised that the Capitol Police were too lax even though the assumption was just plain short-sighted.

Last item is that the pipe bombs planted at the RNC and DNC buildings were blocks away from the Capitol and video shows one guy, so probably one of those who is against ALL Federal government like the guys who tried to kidnap Whitmer in Michigan. I'd call that a true insurrectionist.

On a parting thought, the Constitution and this Nation were based in compromise and finding a middle ground. News outlets and politicians who are loudest and closer to either extreme only tear us apart for their own benefit.

it appears Jefferson, Adams and Webster are all agreed to simply call it a "democracy".

An example of democracy is right here in my state.

Criminal reform example:
Our current governor has spearheaded the early release of thousands lot of non violent criminals back into our society with nothing more than a slap on the wrist. Low level crimes like rapists, child molesters, burglars, drug dealers, theft, vandalism, gun violations, and many others too long to list. All released and reformed.

And then good citizens are blamed when these same reformed individuals go to DC and entice violence.

Regulation example:
Restaurant owners in Los Angeles are fined because customers decide to sit down in a public area near restaurants to eat. Business owners are fined for putting plants on the sidewalks to prevent homeless sleeping, pissing, and defecating in front of their stores.

There was more than one insurrectionist in that group.

I am of the belief that it was the actions of a small group of bad ones in the crowd both right/left wingers and hardened criminals who did this in DC. I am also of the belief that some of these "Trump" flag holders were not even supporters but used that as a cloak to put the blame on him.

Those that should be in that position. . . . are smart enough not to seek it. The best we can hope for is a candidate that puts the country first. . . . instead of themselves.
Amen brother. If we can ask our service members to lay down their lives, ELECTED lawmakers should be willing to put country before their own interests.

But unfortunately money talks too loud and is what drives ANY government.

Things are heating up and the country has double standards. Plain and simple.

You have one group that is all about exercising their rights by burning down buildings, torching cars, closing freeways, assaulting cops, burning American flags, etc, the list goes on. Never once was it called a riot. It's been called "peaceful protests". Everyone just stands back and lets them do destruction and mayhem.

Now you have another side of the country that is sick of the voting corruption and has great love for our flag and freedom. These citizens started off with chanting USA USA and waving the American flag. They were met with confrontation by crowds of Antifa and law enforcement and then all of the sudden called a riot.

BTW, I have been to DC. If you notice the cameras never once pan over to the Southeast side of the building very far. All that area is no better than skid row in Los Angeles. I had to go through that rat pit to store generators in the Navy Yard to prevent vandalizing and theft. My point is a lot of the problems came right out of that part of the city where the Antifa crowds live that began the confrontations.

Burn the American flag and you are patted on the back for a peaceful protest. Wave an American flag and complain about government corruption you are met with confrontation and violence. The main stream media was disgusting. Every other word out of their mouth and plastered on TV was RIOT RIOT RIOT!!! This was sickening to see.

This whole thing was blown out of proportion and nowhere near the destruction that happened everywhere else in this country. Sadly a young women was gunned down for no reason other than holding a flag.
If the storming of the Capitol was because of Antifa, surely the looting was because of the Good Ol' Boys, or am I missing something here?

The looting that I saw, was some weeks back, and definitely not committed by who is usually referred to as "good ol' boys". But, I may not be understanding the question.

Oddly enough, reading through this thread has done nothing to enhance my experience on this forum. Everybody is entitled to an opinion but when I'm here I'd rather question judgement on meaningful stuff like tire pressure and oil filters!
