This is what I've been doing. Although I'm gaining more trust with the keys I had made.

Agreed the plastic lock mechanism is probably the real issue.
When I went to get spare keys made, the man making the keys seemed to be very familiar with them. He asked me if I was having the keys made so I'd have a backup if my originals bent? When I said yes, he told me that the keys that he's making for me should be better, but because of the length of the key, even they may bend in a stiff lock (like our locks are).

My takeaway from the above was that the problem is the tumblers, but the length of the key apparently doesn't make things any better.

I could. Don't always wear the same clothes riding though.
Guess the point is I always carry 2 keys. Don't want to risk breaking one in the lock..
Gotcha... I just was wondering if the ACE keys wouldn't work in the ignit I need for some reason.

In the USA (with no anti-theft chip in the key like other countries), copied keys work in ignition just like originals.

You can use a shorter key for everything on the bike except the ignition. If you press down on the lid of your boxes before turning your key you should never have a problem with twisting or bending.

+1

Shorter key and press on the lid for both locking and unlocking. My perspective changed from "these are low quality bags" to "these bags are just fine."

New life to an old thread...

Couple of questions on the OEM boxes and boxes in general.

1). Those who do use panniers and top cases, do you keep them on the bike full time? (I currently only run the Top Case, but am looking to use the panniers for that gear, and free up the top case to store my helmet when off the bike).

2). Do you use the OEM liners? No Liners? Or aftermarket?

Thanks

My 2013 came with the OEM side cases when new. They have held up just fine. I keep them on the bike all the time except for some off roading excursions. I do not have the top box and I do not use liners. Lots of 2013s were sold new for about $10,000 with the OEM side cases included. This made the side cases a pretty good deal. I would not pay anywhere near list price for them, there are better options available. I really have no complaints about them. They look good, tuck in close to the bike, and as long as you push down on the cover when opening and locking them, they work fine.

Top box (givi) stays on the bike all of the time. No issues.

Original panniers work fine and for my needs are big enough. I used inner bags. However, I really don’t like riding with them on and loaded up. For me on my Gen1 bike, the standard suspension isn’t up to managing me and a loaded bike, as the panniers are IMO, excessively heavy without anything in them. Loaded panniers upset the handling to such a degree that I’d rather used a Lomo waterproof bag strapped on the back seat and be able to enjoy riding at a pace I enjoy.

My pannier days are over, unless I really need lockable luggage, or I invest in better rear suspension.

1) I haven't done any long trips, so I generally only use/mount the side boxes when I'm going to carry large/heavy items, or need to secure it while away from the bike. I have the top case, but never have used it. For the most part, I have my trusty Harbor Freight canvas tool bag , and a couple of bungees, to carry my wallet, extra mags, and other small items.

2) I don't have the liners. I would like/use them, but am not going to pay what they want for something I would only occasionally use.

Would you be interested in selling it and whatever mounting bracket? Will be passing DFW going to/from Austin at the end of February.

When I bought Ténéré and next day went to ride to work realized there is no storage at all. No place for sunglasses or gloves!

Went to my cousins bike shop for a tank bag but they were a couple hundred bucks. On sale was the cheap plastic top case I have had for 5 years for $60. I bought the bike yesterday so I was temporarily out of cash. There is now a nail inserted and bent as a hinge pin.

Would like to get something keyed alike and more secure. And I always worry if the plastic will break and I get off and wonder where the box is!

My panniers stayed on the bike all the time. My main use was traveling/touring/endurance riding so one pannier was full of tools/extra gloves/bike cover/first aid kit/flat repair kit/extra visor, etc. The other one was for the clothes and I used a liner for that so I could just pull it out. Liner bag and laptop fit nicely in the 45L pannier. (I was using Zega Pro 38L/45L panniers.)

I prefer a dry bag style liner bag, fwiw. Just in case. My Yamaha liners for the FJR held up well, as long as you didn't over stuff them. The zippers were not super stout. I haven't had the S10 factory liners to compare to.

I should have pointed out, the pannier inner bags I use are eBay specials, which although not brilliant, were perfectly adequate, and were only about £40 the pair, from a UK supplier.

Yamaha did make some pretty foolish mistakes when designing the luggage but other than the stupid locks I have been pretty well satisfied.

I'm gonna have to respectfully decline. I haven't used it to date, but I do plan to eventually. But, give me a yell when you're passing by. I'm only 20 minutes west from I-35W on US 67.
