to answer the question of "Is the Tenere still a good buy?" That depends on what YOU want in a bike and how you ride and even what YOU value. Before I bought my first Tenere; I made a spreadsheet with just about every spec and some columns for pros and cons. My spreadsheet had every ADV bike above 1000 CC and a couple of bikes I was just interested in owning. The Tenere was well ahead for my purposes. The one glaring thing I had to really think about is reliability. I like to take long trips and I ride my bike to work. I can't miss work. I do NOT want to be stranded in the middle of nowhere. I like to ride in the middle of nowhere. I don't want to have that extra worry in the back of my mind. I ride to relax. And worrying about being stranded on top of the inherit dangers of modern day motorcycling is not relaxing enough for me. I think if you made a spreadsheet or list with the major specs. then a column of intangibles....I believe the Tenere would still win. I've test rode many bikes since....and nothing has (wowed) me enough and more often I appreciate my Tenere even more and can't wait to hop back on a ride away.... And forgot to add...something I've learned and it seems to be getting much worse....Other bike manufacturers lie about their specs. I don't find this with Yamaha.

I’d be looking at the KTM 1290S, the S1000XR, the new Tracer 9 GT, perhaps even the newest version of the big VStrom. There might be others, they’re just off the top of my head. I also quite like the Z1000SX, but I think it’d be too cramped for me. I also quite like the 1050 Tiger, was hoping a new one would appear, however the last version was a nice and very capable bike.

I don’t go off road at all, so don’t really need a true adventure bike, however they fit my frame well and I quite like the way they look and ride. I’ve had an adventure bike since 2003, but I have no loyalty whatsoever to any brand.
you ever consider the versys 1000? seems like a hell of a lot of bike. lots of good tech, nice 4 cylinder. seems to catch more love than the tracer when compared head to head.
I like the off road ability of the tenere and the shaft drive, or i'd really consider the versys.

Hello Sky.........I had looked at the Versys a while back and was fortunate enough to be away in Scotland for a week with a Gen 1 and two Gen 2 Versys. I rode one of Gen 2 bikes and was very impressed with it, especially the engine and the way it delivered its power, it really was excellent. The handling too was great, despite an odd slight vagueness from the front end, which I understand has been addressed on the current model. A couple of things put me off though, one was the weight, at 257kg wet, it’s almost up there with the Super Tenere, and that’s before luggage and accessories. Riding, the weight is irrelevant I know, however there’s loads and loads of time in bike ownership where we manhandle our bikes about......and I’m getting on a bit! The other matter was, one of the bikes, which was a low mileage bike, in our group had a fourth gear issue where it would jump out of gear, regularly. I’d also read of a long termer SX on a bike magazine that had also developed a gearbox issue. A bit more research identified a few more failures, not loads but enough to put me off.

I am fond of the Versys though..........although I do find the current one a bit to busy and fussy cosmetically.

i'm a bit surprised about the gearbox failures... that's more or less the same engine and trans as the ninja 1k right? Just figured all the kinks would be worked out.

I haven't ridden a versys yet... I'm quite happy with my old tenere at the moment. I come from BMW and i'm thoroughly pleased with how solid and well engineered the tenere is. Honestly my next bike may be a super t as well. mine has 83k on it and going strong though. That said the versys seems like an underappreciated gem.

RE: Got a 2021 last week which I believe was the only one available in the Portland, OR area.

I just did a nationwide search on CycleTrader and you might have picked up the last new one in the country.

Thankyou and I am glad I did it. I was tracking this one for about two months, multiple conversations with the dealer on the price. Finally pupped the trigger.

I had a MKII Versys 1000 before my S10, it was a great bike especially with Maxton suspension upgrades. The agility was amazing, however when it passed 14k miles or so it started to develop a gearbox wine which drove me nuts so it had to go. The tube of U has many vids of noisy gearboxes from the z1000 series. I think I was just unlucky.

I think you are asking the wrong people in this forum if you should go with the Africa or S10 after all it is a S10 forum. Many of us have a number of different bikes, but in this forum almost all of love the S10 over most of the other ADV bikes out there.

yes buy the S10 you wont be sorry

that's abit of a bummer. i seem to have heard of a few people having gearbox problems with that bike. if i wanted gearbox problems i'd buy another BMW
